Why isn't Good Friday a holiday in the US?

Here's something topical that I was wondering about as I sit here at work on this Good Friday. My Canadian friends and family are always surprised when I tell them I have to work today (I work in the US) and I always have to explain that Good Friday is not a US holiday, and they're like "Wow, really? That's weird!". Meanwhile in Canada, government offices, banks, schools and many businesses are closed today. I thought it a bit odd as Canada is a much more secular country than the US is, but it's a holiday here. Of course, it likely has nothing at all to do with religion, it's probably just because Canadians like holidays, we even made up one in August just so folks have a day off that month. They didn't even bother coming up with a name, it's just called a "Civic holiday". Hell, even Easter Monday is a holiday here, not as much of one as most businesses will be open, but government/banks/schools will still be closed. So, what gives, Americans?

Dammit, I meant to post this in regular other, not politics. Could a mod kindly please move it there? Or it's kind of about religion, maybe it should stay here?

Why do you want good friday off? I know nothing about it ... is there something that you need to do on this holiday that you can't do if you are working?

Why would the death of a fictional character from a book deserve its own holiday? Do we have a holiday for when Dumbledore died?

Maybe a paid day off is just a nice thing to have?

Wait a minute, of course it is! I'm off today. In fact, I used today as a springboard to take a week's vacation. Five days off for the price of four vacation days. Can't beat that.

Also, you know, a lot of people take Christianity seriously and today is sort of a big deal for them.

I tell you what, after we add an atheist/agnostic celebration national holiday, we can talk about Good Friday

Do you take a holiday for that character's birth?

No, but to be fair we should if we are going to for Jesus.

This surge in thinking there’s any chance Jesus wasn’t real is odd, but understandable.

I guess I'm just silly, I like having paid days off. Do Americans not?

I'm an atheist with the best of them, but I like paid days off. Again, I'm silly that way.

Yeah sure, you just appropriate an existing pagan holiday for that.

We used to get our paychecks at the end of the week at one job I had. My boss used to say that every Friday was Good Friday.

Re: Why isn't Good Friday a holiday in the US?

This is the first year where my company decided NOT to have Good Friday off as a paid holiday. But with how empty the parking garage is, I don't think people got the memo.

Holidays are typically fixed dates or occur at certain weeks within a month so probably too much variation in this regard.

Wall Street is closed today. So it's a holiday in the financial world at least.

Really, I think food and restaurant industries should work on making this a drinking holiday, much like St. Paddy's Day, Cinco de Mayo and Halloween now are.

I was just told we were being released from work early today. I assume it's because it's Passover. Right?

Most national holidays in America are non religious. Christmas is the exception that proves the rule.

With the exception of Christmas all our national holidays are atheist/agnostic.

Because if they made every religious event from every religion a holiday, we could just about take the whole year off.

Re: Why isn't Good Friday a holiday in the US?

Canada’s longstanding relationship with the UK, which has State Religion, is probably the reason they cling to having religious holidays like Good Friday, Monday After Easter, and Boxing Day.

I want a national holiday to remember when Zeus raped Alcmene and Hercules was conceived.

That does sound worth celebrating.
