Been telling them for years to ban smoking in there.

I took a river boat by it but never stepped inside. Looks like severe damage. That place has survived wars and all kinds of stuff. Bummer.

Seems like a fire like this completely took the city's resources by surprise.

Damn... I'm staying very near to there in July.

CBS news anchor asked if this is a functioning church.
Not now, it isn't.

So sad. I had to chuckle when the anchor noted how difficult it would be happening just a few days before Easter, as if there was a good time of year for an iconic 13th century cathedral to burn to the ground.

I don't know how often something like this happens but when a fire breaks out in a historical site like this, do you approach it with the mindset of not adding to the damage to the structure or is the main/only concern putting out the fire even if your methods hurt the building (water damage; broken, priceless stained glass...etc)?

Maybe drop some anti-fire material from above?

Yeah, a guest was commenting how you could see the spire historically as a marker then she cut herself of quickly and said, "Well, not anymore."

Wow, that's horrible!
These classic cathedrals are rare and beautiful, especially any in Europe that survived World War II. It's a terrible tragedy to lose this iconic, historic cathedral building. It's filled with artwork, archives, just tons of tangible artifacts of history literally in the building. And perhaps they can save or rebuild it in some way. Sounds like it may be challenging to get firefighting equipment and personnel there. No deaths reported, thankfully.
In the midst of despair, may there always be room for hope. Ultimately, a church not a building; a church is a people.

I hope Paris and France in general, make plans to rebuild it. There's a lot of generational artisans who would love to help and who might not have been approached in the past due to cosmetic repairs and their services were not needed, but now, it's all hands on deck.

Apparently the entire island is being evacuated, and fire and police are to leave as well.

That's what a CBS guest is reporting. Seems odd. They're afraid the flames will spread across the island.
