My email address is being inundated with spam

I wasn't sure if this should go in the tech folder but figured it might be broad enough for otter.

So, I'm watching TV with a friend when I get some text messages. They're from Best Buy confirming two orders I didn't really make. Each order contained a graphics card, one priced at $799 and the other at $849. I see the orders are still listed as in process so immediately cancel the orders and change my password. Then I get batted around Best Buy operators for 2 hours trying to get the last charges reversed (online purchases for antivirus sent to my email). There was a shipping address that wasn't mine listed on the orders, so I spent another hour or so filing a police report.

Yikes. It was when I contacted the police that I noticed the email address associated with my Best Buy account now had more than 2,000 unread emails! As I scroll, I see nearly all of them are confirmation emails for digital subscriptions, requests for appointments, registrations for sites, etc. It took a long time to get to the end of that, but it started around the time the orders were placed. Upon reading more about it, I've learned that scammers will unleash waves of spam to hide legit emails, like the ones about the Best Buy orders. Luckily, whoever placed the orders didn't turn off text notifications

Well, we're at more than 12 hours since the orders were placed. No more suspicious activity on my cards, but the spam mail just keeps rolling in Has anyone had this happen to him? Will this eventually die down or is this email address basically dead now? I know there's nothing I can do to slow this down, but I sure wish there was. Frustrating.

Did you check here:
https://haveibeenpwned.com/

Are you sure your email address hasn't been compromised as well (if you share passwords)? If they just did some kind of registration bomb to flood your inbox, and they don't have access to your actual email account, those will die off because they usually require some confirmation. But if it's just general spam, once your email address is out there and added to spam lists that are sold, I'm not sure what you can do besides set up aggressive filters or hope your mail provider has a great algorithm.

Re: My email address is being inundated with spam

Yeah, I went to that site, but it basically only confirmed the obvious. I really don't think my actual email account was compromised, though. Luckily, I already had two different passwords on my Best Buy and email accounts, but I decided to change the email password anyway.

I haven't seen any weird messages in my sent mail. It's just a lot of thanks for your interest, please confirm your email, and thanks for your subscription messages. Unlucky for me, you don't need access to someone's account to add them to an email list.

If you're not sure, change your email address password. It's annoying, but it will give you piece of mind. Can't help with the spam. Just keep marking it as spam and your email's spam filter should learn to sort it into a spam folder for you.

Exact same thing happened to me a year ago. Over 2000 "welcome" emails from every mailing list in the world. It took a while to stop all/most of them but it can be done. I still get 1 or 2 a day but it's not terrible although I'm not using that email for my main account any longer. I got Google Fiber and was switching to Gmail right at the same time all the Spam started.

I'm not sure but I think someone did try to buy something somewhere when the spam started but it was caught without me having to do anything.

Re: My email address is being inundated with spam

I got one of those emails recently that said they've installed spyware on my computer, and have me watching sick porn and have recorded me on my computer's camera and that they'll release all this info unless I pay up.
Issue with that is, I don't watch porn, and even if I did, I don't have a camera on my computer to record me 'bating it. So I'd like to call their bluff - though I'm sure it's just a robo email.

There's a ton of these kinds of extortion emails flying around right now, demanding payment in bitcoin. (I work in corporate IT security and specifically I do work on phishing emails).

And since most of them don't have any live links or attachments, just "how to pay me in bitcoin" type instructions, I assume they are going through a lot of weaker spam/malware filtering solutions. They keep fiddling with the words/format, too, to circumvent filtering efforts.

A lot of times they put a password from one of your pwned accounts from the various data breaches in there to make their claims seem more credible.

Re: My email address is being inundated with spam

Probably, your email ID has been used somewhere which sell date or IDs to marketing firms or spammers etc. In this regard, you shouldn't click on any link provided on these mails and just check the box and click on spam option. If you are using Gmail, then you can also report this kind of spam or even can block these email address by following this guide. Similarly, if you are using this email address for your business, webstore or website's contact us form then this video would also assist you in blocking IPs by using the control panel of your host.

I also heard about IP blocking via email server as well. However, I never used it. Maybe people who use premium mailing service can get benefits of such services. Mailing sites should take serious actions about these spams. Either it is a spambot or human spam. Mayhap, next warfare would be fought in cyberspace.
