What's good to try with Indian Food?

Okay ever since I started doing doordash deliveries I've had a lot of fun meeting people and seeing so many different types of restaurants all around town. I have been to this one local Indian restaurant twice now and honestly I think they are the nicest people I have ever met running a business. Once I give them my delivery order they gave me a free cup of Chai Tea, a few food samples to try, and when I left they gave me a small cup of what tastes like a mango smoothie. I have never had Indian Food before and I don't know what's good to try. Here's a picture of the tea they gave me.

I'm being serious, I've never had Indian food before and I'm wondering what are some good dishes to try.

Tandoori Chicken and some Naan bread would be a fairly easy starting point.

Butter Chicken and Chicken Tikka Masala are a good place to start. Both are usually mild and delicious. The sauce is creamy and you eat it over rice.

Re: What's good to try with Indian Food?

Try Tikka Masala chicken, naan, and some Biryani. Sides, I'd do Pakoras. I tend to do veggie pakoras as the chicken/lamb tends to fill me up before the main course, but lamb pakoras are really good if you go to the right place. Every restaurant will have their own interpretation of sauces, so some might be mild to you and enjoyable or some might be way overbearing and spicy. Recommend having a side of their sauce before committing. Most restaurants let you taste their sauces with a little bit of naan.

I would say shrimp aloo curry and lamb vindaloo, both with naan, of course. So delicious, but maybe ask them to go easy on the chilies. They can be very hot.

If you've ever had, and liked, okra, get some bhindi bhaji. Delicious!

Almost forgot, also order rice.

The drink you had is called 'mango lassi'.

I love Indian food. I think it has the best vegetarian menu out there. I personally think that if you like any part of it, you can't go wrong. See if they have a sampler with lots of small portions of different dishes.

But stay away lime pickle. It's a strongly flavored condiment.

My favorite veggie dish is Channa Masala. It's a garbanzo bean curry and is really delicious Order it mild.

I've only had indian once, and while the actual food was OK, what I really loved was the appetizer. It looked like a small calzone, but inside was potato chunks and spices. Super yummy. Anyone know what that thing is called?

Re: What's good to try with Indian Food?

Yup, Chicken Tikka Masala and Butter Chicken (aka Chicken Makhani) are both good choices, although don't get both of them as they are somewhat similar. As DVDP mentioned, one of the Biryani dishes is also a solid choice, along with some naan and perhaps some samosas as an appetizer. The Saag dishes can also be quite good, which feature a spinach-based cream sauce. One thing that makes Indian food stand out is the rice, which is called Basmati. It has a unique flavor. We love the stuff in my house.

Try this:
Chicken Makhani
Lamb Biryani
Vegetable samosas
Naan

I think this combo will give you a good sense of Indian cuisine.

It was probably a samosa.

Re: What's good to try with Indian Food?

As mentioned several times already, Chicken Tikka Masala is a good starting point. Naan (bread) is also great for soaking up any leftover sauce, and many places offer it with additional fillings (garlic and potato are my two favorites). Dal Makhani (creamed black lentils) is my favorite vegetarian entree when done well, but I have found that many places make it too watery and/or too bland.

This place has a lunch buffet, I'll just pick a day soon to try it.

Re: What's good to try with Indian Food?

I was going to ask if they have a buffet, as many Indian restaurants have them. That's the best way to sample lots of things, and they are sure to have naan, saag paneer (a favorite of mine, creamed spinach with chunks of cheese), and a bunch of the other things folks have mentioned here.. The quality at buffets is usually not as good (for obvious reasons, the food isn't cooked for your order) but it's a great start.

Re: What's good to try with Indian Food?

buffet is a good way to go. I will also say Chicken Tikki Massala is one of my favorites. I've actually started making it at home from scratch, if you dont like spicy food I would ask for mild if you end up doing take out instead of a buffet. Chicken Biriani is another favorite main dish for me. As for apps samosa, vegetable pakora and naan are all favorites as well. most of these things are in a standard buffet.

Re: What's good to try with Indian Food?

I would start with either a buffet (understanding nothing will be as good as fresh) or what some places call a thali dinner--you pick a main dish, and they'll also provide a variety of sides. If you're picking a main dish and eat chicken, I'd recommend butter chicken (murgh makhani) or chicken tikka masala. Both those are really similar (so one or the other). Most people like them, and they're fairly mild.

Other than that, it's hard to know what to recommend--just try things and keep track. Every place will have it's own spice blends, though, so what you love at one restaurant may be different at another. I make pretty much every dish mentioned in this thread at home for 1/5th the price, and all the spice blends can vary a lot from recipe to recipe--it's the same with restaurants.

Re: What's good to try with Indian Food?

Chicken Biryani is the defacto starter dish for Indian food imo. It's very simply their take on Chicken and Rice and it's delicious.

After that you have Chicken Tikka Marsala and Butter Chicken. Also Lamb Josh Rogen.

Once you get ready for a bit of heat you can try some Tandoori Chicken

And of course Naan. Everything tastes quite different, but when it's cooked properly it's ridiculously tender and thoroughly delicious.

Isn't it somewhat sad there isn't really a native American Indian food in our culture aside from corn which is unrecognizable from before Columbus?

Re: What's good to try with Indian Food?

Well I found a menu for the restaurant, Chicken biranyi, Garlic Naan Bread, and Paneer Pakora sounds like what I'll try first. Either that or go for the lunch buffet this week.
