A.I. has gone too far again: OpenAI text generator is too good

OpenAI built a text generator so good, it’s considered too dangerous to release
https://techcrunch.com/2019/02/17/op...tor-dangerous/

But with every good application of the system, such as bots capable of better dialog and better speech recognition, the non-profit found several more, like generating fake news, impersonating people, or automating abusive or spam comments on social media.

To wit: when GPT-2 was tasked with writing a response to the prompt, “Recycling is good for the world, no, you could not be more wrong,” the machine spat back:

“Recycling is NOT good for the world. It is bad for the environment, it is bad for our health, and it is bad for our economy. I’m not kidding. Recycling is not good for the environment. It is destructive to the earth and it is a major contributor to global warming. Recycling is not good for our health. It contributes to obesity and diseases like heart disease and cancer. Recycling is bad for our economy. It increases the cost of a product, and in turn, the price of everything that is made with that product. Recycling is not good for our nation. We pay a tremendous price for the privilege of having the world’s most advanced and efficient recycling system. Recycling is a huge, colossal waste of time, energy, money, and resources.”

No wonder OpenAI was worried about releasing it.
Now, that word salad is fairly nonsensical, but it's coherent enough that it's indistinguishable from certain styles of posts on discussion forums. Sound familiar?

An orange dick ...

I’ll bet it is smarter than any other A.I. in history, and it works more hours than any other A.I. ever has.

That sure doesn't pass the Turing test for me. What a load of rubbish.

AI and machine inteligence, of course, belong nowhere near the news agencies, politics, or the end process of making "ethical" or "unethical" decisions. Leave those things up to the terribly imperfect people of the world.

That sounds like a lot of posts I've read. I think the Russian Army is a customer.

If I didn't know any better, I'd say that AI is just former member "Dragon Tattoo".

Speaking of YouTube, it's very good at creating more idiots:

Researchers believe they have identified the prime driver for a startling rise in the number of people who think the Earth is flat: Google’s video-sharing site, YouTube.

Their suspicion was raised when they attended the world’s largest gatherings of Flat Earthers at the movement’s annual conference in Raleigh, North Carolina, in 2017, and then in Denver, Colorado, last year.

Interviews with 30 attendees revealed a pattern in the stories people told about how they came to be convinced that the Earth was not a large round rock spinning through space but a large flat disc doing much the same thing.

Of the 30, all but one said they had not considered the Earth to be flat two years ago but changed their minds after watching videos promoting conspiracy theories on YouTube. “The only person who didn’t say this was there with his daughter and his son-in-law and they had seen it on YouTube and told him about it,” said Asheley Landrum, who led the research at Texas Tech University.

The interviews revealed that most had been watching videos about other conspiracies, with alternative takes on 9/11, the Sandy Hook school shooting and whether Nasa really went to the moon, when YouTube offered up Flat Earth videos for them to watch next.

Some said they watched the videos only in order to debunk them but soon found themselves won over by the material.

Yeah, flat earthers are infuriatingly stupid.

A good number of them also appear to be people of 'faith.'

Honest answer: No, I haven't (and I don't want to!). Youtube is a haven for the lowest common denominator of internet dregs, and another huge, bloated company that I wish would just go away. If they didn't recompress and censor the hell (ie, DRM madness) out of their content, they might be a little more respectable.

"We interviewed thirty people at a flat earth convention and 96.7% of them said they never considered the earth to be flat until seeing YouTube videos in the last two years."

A genius: "Only 30, tho?"

Not all YouTube commenters are stupid:

"If the earth was flat, cats would already have pushed everything off of it."
