One of the reasons I stopped going there, as well as nasty-behaving children.

...not to mention the urine- and mucus-soaked ball pit of despair...

I haven't been a a CEC with a ball pit in years. For the most part, they don't even have real video games anymore. Just various ways of dispensing tickets in exchange for tokens (or virtual tokens on electronic cards now)

Yeah, the restaurants around me got rid of the ball pits and jungle gyms. It doesn't make sense to have that stuff taking up space that basically promotes the kids not swiping their cards.

Re: Chuck E. Cheese’s “recycled slices” ?

I went to one a few months ago for the first time in 20-ish years. The last time I was at one it was still called Showbiz Pizza. The pizza wasn't too bad, looked fresh and non-recycled. The salad bar looked like it was pretty good, but I didn't have any. The games and "rides" all operated, were fired up by a card that was held up to a scanner, and was clean. The kids seemed to be well-behaved, as were the adults. The birthday party area was a madhouse, though. They had 6 different parties scheduled at once, putting the families in long lines of tables, with minimal space between. This lead to kids getting into traffic jams as they wanted to move around and talk to their friends, and parents having a lot of difficulty getting around to assist with the kids and their food.

Overall, it wasn't as terrible as I thought it would be. I don't relish the idea of going back, but it's not something I'd actively try to avoid.

Re: Chuck E. Cheese’s “recycled slices” ?

^ I don’t think I’ve been to a Chuck E. Cheese since it was Showbiz Pizza either. I remember in the mid to late 80s it kept switching back and forth from Chuck E. Cheese to Showbiz every few years. My little kid mind was sure it was some sort of tax loophole.

I was disheartened last time I heard they stopped the animatronic shows and just had a projector showing the band playing.

What kind of childhood did you have that you even knew what a tax loophole was?!

I don’t know where I got the idea but I thought I was pretty damn smart for figuring it all out. Apparently, insanely loud, chaotic, children’s pizza joints, were where the coke head yuppies of the 80s made their fortunes.
