Re: The Gig Economy - do you side hustle?

In the 1950s, you could suport a family with one person working.

By the 1980s, you needed two, incomes to raise that family.

Now everyone needs a fulltime job and a side hustle just to make ends meet.

Isn’t everyone getting sick of this shit, yet?

In a few more years we’ll all be living in massive dormitories at our workplace, and working sixteen hours a day just for room and board, and three meals in a shitty cafeteria.

Hey, don't get married or have kids. That's 90% of the problem solved right there!

I told my daughter that by the time she's grown up she'll need to have four jobs.
She got mad at me.

Five year olds are so sensitive.

But... Real talk. It's going to be JUST like Sorry to Bother You.
Then... Blade Runner 2049.

I guess my answer is yes ... although I enjoy it and would consider it one of my hobbies, I suppose umpiring softball/baseball and officiating volleyball has turned into a side hustle. It paid for most of my wife's car and is keeping us afloat while the kids are doing their best to bleed me dry.

Re: The Gig Economy - do you side hustle?

^ The rich get richer and are working less and less... The poor get poorer and are working less and less. The Middle class is just getting by, but is working more and more ... and more.

And, they say America is still one of the best places in the world to live? Who's "they" one asks? Members of the 1% and the "other half" who live below the poverty line!

Back in the day, I used to flip textbooks on Half.com. The money was great, and so was the exercise, packaging and walking to the Post Office everyday.

That was before the demise of Half.com and before everybody else got into the act. Never bothered with Amazon (they've always been too greedy with fees, nickel and diming you at every turn, even back in the day. God knows my hatrid of them is legendary!) I had a good 15-year run of tax-free money, which to this day continues to grow as that was the gravy which I put away for a rainy day.

And it helps that I've never married and certainly won't have kids. Too expensive, too much trouble, too much stress, and no guarantee they'll turn out OK, and certainly no guarantee that they'll return the love and favor and support YOU if you need it in YOUR old age. Anyway, by then, the robots will have taken over anyway, so kids won't want to be bothered with their oldfolk parents....

I like getting to see the many different restaurants around town, and have actually met some really cool people of all different backgrounds. I try to make between $300-$400 a week, it pays the bills and has helped me with getting back some stability. The downside-I have been to some pretty shade places in the worst parts of town, its a 1099 position, and I worry about putting miles on my car. Message me if you have any questions.
Nice. You also get to be out and about, so that's good for you in a sense. I applied and got accepted last night - the background check was instant it seemed, and I am waiting for the DoorDash kit - it should be here in a few days. Then I'll probably have to attend the orientation.

I didn't attend an orientation, but LA might be different. I followed the instructions in the dasher kit, watched a few youtube videos, and downloaded the app to my phone. It's very easy money.

I've been kinda joking/low key trying to encourage some chick friends of mine who are broke and single to either do cam shows or put up Foot Fetish pages on IG.

Being retired from the military at age 39, any job is kind of a side hustle.

I'm a freelance photographer on the side. I do a few gigs a month. I'd hopefully like to transition to that being my fulltime gig down the road. Really want to be my own boss at this point.

Re: The Gig Economy - do you side hustle?

I still have ethical issues with people buying new, high demand items like video game consoles solely for the purpose of flipping. Something about the invisible hand needing to be slapped, I guess.

But my wife and I have always done stuff from thrift stores and whatnot for a little extra cash. Once it's on that secondary market, it's all fair game. My wife in particular enjoys finding high value purses at Goodwill for $10, using them for a month just for fun, then flipping them for $50 on eBay.

I was in LA over the Summer last year and decided to take a Uber from the airport to the hotel. The driver who lives in LA was clueless even with GPS on his phone. It took two hours to get to my hotel when it was supposed to take only 45 minutes. I was so mad I could have crowned the guy.

Don't retail stores basically buy high demand items solely for the purpose of flipping as well?

You can report the driver taking a bad route and get a refund.

Pfft, sounds like typical LA travel time to me.

Isn’t that what Tinder and Grindr are for?

Not exactly. You can't just buy/sell sex on there. If someone wants to sell $20 handies, there should be a mainstream platform for it!
