Federal government shutdown 2018(-2019?)
Anyone else impacted by the shutdown?
I am a contractor at a .gov agency and was told to bring my work laptop home with me on Friday. While non-critical government employees are forbidden from working, as a contractor, I was told I am allowed to continue working through the shutdown at an alternate, non-government, work site for the short term.
There are still a few questions floating around about what is and is not allowed. For example, we don't know whether we are we allowed to use the agency email.

For the short term, yes. I can't say what happens if it goes on longer than 2 weeks. Wouldn't be surprised if told to stop work after that. In that case, we use vacation or leave-without-pay.

We work in conjunction with DHS, and as long as it's business as usual for them (it is so far), it will be business as usual for us. Of course, even in normal times when I need to talk to someone at US Customs at a particular port I often have a hard time getting through to anyone, it might be a bit harder now if people decide to answer the phones even less than they usually do.

We got lucky the last few shutdowns. We were in the middle of some critical hardware tests, and were classified as "essential" personnel, so we were exempt from the shutdown. Not the case this time.

A family member was in the process of moving due to a relocation of her government job. At the moment she’s not sure what she should do.

It’s not like the job is going to disappear ... but she may be delayed in starting. I can’t see delaying the move unless there are financial impacts.

The job is not going to disappear, but if she is a civil servant, I wonder if she can relocate during the shutdown since that might be considered a government expense.

I think one of the big issues is she can’t use her work credit card for expenses.
