We're fine up here in the interior. There were some substantial damages down south though. Roads buckled, buildings cracked, water leaks, etc. Good news is that they called off the tsunami warning!

I have two high school friends who live in Alaska. One posted she was safe, the other (who lives north of Anchorage) hasn't posted anything yet.

I didn't know Alaska could get a strong quake like that.

The Pacific and Caribbean plates meet right off Alaska's southern shore.

Oh yeah. We get a lot of them.

http://earthquake.alaska.edu/

From the link, "Seventy-five percent of all earthquakes in the United States with magnitudes larger than five happen in Alaska."

So powerful a magnitude was this earthquake as to add an extra day to the month of November. Damn.

The one in 1964 remained the most powerful earthquake in North America.

60's earthquake in AK is still fresh in many elderly individuals around the Pacific NW. They always talk about it will come back. It did.

Have to wonder if this is the spark many talk about.

Re: Alaska Earthquake 7.0 - 11.31.18

The '64 Anchorage quake measured something like 9.1 or 9.2. In other words, more than 100x the energy was released in that quake compared to today's 7.0. So, this 7.0 while "major" hardly compared to the '60s quake at all.

Glad there was no tsunami. But yeah, Alaska gets earthquakes regularly. The mountain ranges there are caused by the Pacific plate slamming in and folding the land in that region. Very seismically active.

I know there's a prediction of a major quake off Washington and Oregon, causing an enormous tsunami.

You should have time to prepare if it’s not until tomorrow.

Edit: ah shit, that’s not right either.

Hilarious live coverage all over the media networks.

"From what see there, large rocks have been displaced..." Really. Yah don't say.

This is what happens when you're simply a news reader, not a news reporter.

It looks like they dodged a bullet since we will be going from November 30th to December 1st. It will be like that day never happened!!

Glad it wasn't worse than it was. I used to live in Palmer, about an hour from Anchorage.

I can’t remember anything that happened on 11-31 in the past. It’s like the day doesn’t exist.

The other friend finally posted. She said everyone is okay but they have a lot of cleaning to do. She said it was pretty scary.

Remember, remember
31 November
There was no Great Alaska Earthquake

I know of no way
To forget this never happened day

When Alaska did not shake
(And also don’t forget Solid Snake)

Glad folks are reporting they are OK! People don’t think of the locations outside of California which can have a major earthquake. I know the New Madrid vault runs right through here, but most people don’t think about it.

For me Nov 31st will always be Alaska Earthquake remembrance day. I'm going to work to make it a holiday with deep deep discounts of up to 80% off at retailers with all proceeds going to the great people of Alaska.
