Oh, Canada. How else are you supposed to play curling?!?

Oh, Canada....

An Olympic gold medallist's curling team has been kicked out of the Red Deer Curling Classic tournament for poor behaviour and drunkenness.

Ryan Fry, who won gold for Canada at the 2014 Winter Olympics, and team mates Jamie Koe, Chris Schille, and DJ Kidby forfeited their final game after fans and opponents complained.

The group reportedly broke brooms and damaged locker rooms.

Mr Fry later apologised for his behaviour.

He was part of the Canadian curling team that bested Great Britain's curlers in the Sochi 2014 final.

"They went out to curl and they were extremely drunk and breaking brooms and swearing," Red Deer Curling Centre facility manager Wade Thurber told Canadian broadcaster CBC.

Mr Thurber also said there was "some damage in the locker room", and as a result they were disqualified.

"I wish nothing more than to apologize to everyone individually," Olympian Ryan Fry said in a statement.

"I will strive to become a better version of myself while contributing positively to the sport and curling community that I love so much."

Although he was not taking part, Jamie Koe also issued a statement apologising on behalf of the team.

The Red Deer Classic bonspiel, or curling event, is a part of the World Curling Tour.

It takes place annually in Red Deer, Alberta, and counts towards rankings of the best curling teams in Canada.

I was hoping this was women’s curling and it was going to involve nudity.

A drunken Canadian? How is that even newsworthy?

That said ... I would really like to learn to curl.

Crazy Canadians. They don't call it a "beer and chicken wings sport" for nothing, eh?

I was once kinda forced into a "fun" curling "game" as one of those lame "employee engagement and team building" things.

It was fucking bullshit. Fuck curling, hosers.

Yeah, the local curling club is only a few blocks from my house and the viewing lounge is a popular old-timer bar. My wife talked me into trying it so I entered a rookie tournament a couple years ago. It was a fun enough experience just not my bag.

Curling should not be played by any self-respecting person. Shuffleboard on ice with kettles, brooms, and sliding shoes. Could anything be more dweeby?

Well fuck me, the only Canadian who likes curling is the French Canadian in Quebec!

Yeah, this.

To me it seems like curling is more popular in the more rural, northern parts of Canada because they have fuck all to do. Have no idea if that's true or not though.
But then again, you're in Montreal, so you should have plenty of more interesting things to do and watch.

^Well, we do span about 42 degrees of latitude, so yeah, we have what we would consider more northern parts. Most of the Canadians posting here live within the same latitude extents as 'fucking Oregon,' for reference.

Yeah, we have northern parts, southern parts, etc. just like every other country. Whitehorse is sure fucking northern to me, it would take me days to drive there and it would be cold as hell. Geography is hard!

I hope he was doing the typical "tongue-in-cheek American put-down of Canadians", not displaying hopeless ignorance. I would venture that 99.9% of Americans who post here are aware that the vast majority of us live in modern, cosmopolitan full-service cities, not igloos on the tundra, and experience climates comparable to the northern half of the States.

You're probably correct, but sometimes I really wonder.
