So I need a car jack...

I've never had a problem changing a tire, but it's always been in a driveway or a parking lot or someplace where I don't have cars speeding by me. Yesterday I blew out a tire on the highway (luckily it was the passenger side tire) and had to change the tire there as I couldn't make it to the next exit. My goodness the jack that came with the car was pure shit and took forever. I'd like a better quality one that I can leave in the trunk for situations like that. I looked up "portable jack" or "travel jack" and didn't really find anything.

TLDR: I suck at the internet and suck and being a man and changing a tire so give me recomendations.

Re: So I need a car jack...

Does your car have one of those openings for a jack or is it a standard setup where you just slide it under the frame?

Never change a tire on a highway. Drive on the rims to an exit, or call AAA. Dozens die every year from highway shoulder accidents. Your life is worth more than any delay or damage to your car. I once saw a man cut in half while changing a tire, and we medevac these type of accidents often.

Re: So I need a car jack...

Just make sure you can get one that will support the weight of your car. That's really the only thing to look out for when buying one.

Re: So I need Jacking Instructions

This factory jack worked fine the first time I changed a tire on my '74 Chevy Nova -- second time not so much when the bumper joint didn't hold due to rust. I added a scissor jack after that issue.

Why not just read Amazon reviews. Best source of information on tons of consumer products. If you have a few hours to wait AAA would be the best because they'll usually change it for you; unless you get the guy that I got. He worked for a company called "Fixx-A-Flat" and I had to show him how to change a tire. He also didn't want to get his nice, new, and clean Khaki pants dirty changing a car tire.

Because I go down review holes and never come out. I start reading negative reviews and that's all I focus on.

what kind of car do you drive? I like bottle jacks as they are small/compact but they generally have a flat top which a vehicle can slide off of which is an issue. Unless you have a 4x4 I can see where you may have problems getting All-in-One Bottle Jack/Jack Stand under the axle or another place under the car from which you can get the jack under there to get started. A standard scissor jack is good for that reason especially where the car will be even lower with a flat tire...

Scissor jack

Amazon Amazon

Something like this adapter would be good to use with a regular bottle jack.

Also it looks like Home Depot sells the jack stand / bottle jack assembly you linked to, so you might be able to see it in store. Its over a foot tall so it might be good to get an idea what it looks like before you buy.

I didn't think about that. I wouldn't have had a foot to get under the car.

Re: So I need a car jack...

I'd like to add, before you "need" to change a tire, try doing it in a safe area like your driveway or even residential street (if safe enough). Knowing how to safely raise the car, and loosen the lug nuts (generally with weight of car on wheel) will make it much easier when you need to do so.

About two hours ago, I noticed, for the first time, a building in my neighborhood labeled "Harbor Freight Tools." It was closed up tight at 12 noon on a weekday, not a sign of life.

My friend's friend's dad got killed when he stopped to help someone change a tire on the side of the highway. She found out her father died from her mother's Facebook page. How f'ed up is that?

My dad bought a small 3 ton hydraulic jack like this one when I was a kid. It was a Craftsman. Lifted a car with little effort. I could even run it easily when I was ten or so. You'll need to put it under the frame somewhere solid but it's small and gets 'er dun!
