Trash Compactor Accident

Turns out that this happened right across from the building I work in. Crazy story. Surprised that the guy was alive when they pulled him out.

DENVER — A Denver man is lucky to be alive after a horrifying trash compactor accident over the weekend.

"It's unimaginable what it must have been like for him," said a friend of the victim.

Scott Walsh, 22 was trying to retrieve a friend's cell phone that had fallen into a trash chute at the Griffis Union North Apartments near Union Station.

“And he was reaching down to get it for her and fell head first down the chute," said Liz DiSalvo, Walsh’s friend.

Matt Johnson, one of Walsh's friends who witnessed the accident, said they didn't realize it was a garbage compactor at the bottom of the chute.

"When he fell down, it activated the compactor and he was in there, I would say, approximately five minutes," DiSalvo said.

The weight-activated machine partially crushed Walsh’s head, torso and lower body, breaking both of his legs, fracturing his skull in two places and rupturing the arteries in his neck.

"I saw him come out of the trash compactor,” Johnson said. “It wasn't a very good scene. He's very lucky to be alive."

Doctors say Walsh has no brain or spinal damage.

"It's a miracle," Johnson said.

I want to know how her phone fell into the garbage chute in the first place.

Re: Trash Compactor Accident

Sheer stupidity. The cell phone is turning into the downfall of society. A damn phone is more important than a man's life, it seems. If he had stopped to THINK just a moment before jumping in, he wouldn't have suffered such misery.

I'd guess most people would jump into a damn trash compactor for god-damned phones than consider the sanctity of their own lives and / or peril at being squished to death.

I make a mental note to all this man to the rapidly growing list of people who have jumped into sewers, cesspools, porapotties, etc to "rescue" their shitty phones.

He didn't jump in. He fell in. Like by accident.

No, I'm actually 255 years old, but dotage has not set in yet, since I can still recognize the misguided and misplaced importance people place on their phones these days -- mere THINGS that don't mean two shits in the grand scheme of our existence in this grand world.

I started to include the whole clip (including that) but it was 6 1/2 minutes long. This generation can't pay attention that long.

Agreed. I fucking hate cell phones, especially I-phones. People are so dependent on these things that they're willing to sacrifice their lives for them. Fucking idiots. All of these people deserve Darwin awards:

I have a regular crappy old cell phone (out of necessity) with no texting or graphics, but if I could I'd smash the fucking thing into a million pieces.

Well, let's see. Would you jump into a trash compactor, onto train tracks, etc. & risk your life to retrieve your precious & holy I-phone?! If so, great! More power to you!!! We need more people like you in our society!!!

My I-phone has photos of my cat. I'd jump in a volcano to save it.

Nope, not the same person. My posts are typically a lot more outspoken than Zyzzle's - LOL. Plus, the reality is that I don't even think it's possible to have two accounts on this site. Never tried it, though - so not 100% sure about this.
