Went out for pizza, a couple sits right next to us and then....

Wife and I went to the Keys to visit family last week.
While there we decided to try out this middle of nowhere bar that we heard had great pizza.

On the way to my cousins house we drove over to this place to take a look.

It’s way off the regular road but we wanted to see what the place was about.
It’s one of these places that has a tradition of covering every open space with a paper bill.
I guess you write something on it and staple it to the wall or ceiling.

So we find the place and outside is an odd looking bloke walking around wearing a kilt. Just looked off.
Also a lot of motorcycles parked out front. Looked like a biker thing going on.
So we decided not to go in.

Get to my cousins house, mention the place and he says yeah they have great pizza.
So we decide to go the next day.

We get there and go inside.
It’s a little hole in the wall place with dollar bills covering every inch of the interior.

A tiny 13” tv behind the bar.
Pretty dark in there too.

We sit down order two pizzas.
Apparently they have a very good shrimp pizza so we ordered a pink and a white pizza.

While waiting an older couple is seated right next to us.

Now my cousin is a very animated and very talkative person.
Ask him a question and he’ll go on forever.

We’re from Philly so he has his Flyers shirt on and we’re just talking about random stuff. Probably some of the stuff he got into when he was younger.
That tends to be what he talks about.

I see that the man next to us gets a smile on his face and is looking right at my cousin, I’ll call him Bob.
I’m a little worried because while Bob is a terrific person, his personality can come across as very overbearing.
The man says to bob, “I see your Flyers shirt. What do you think of their new mascot Gritty?”

Cousin Bob isn’t really a sports guy it was more just a Philly shirt then a Flyers shirt but he’s aware of Gritty.

So we all chat about Gritty and the Flyers and some general sports things.

We find out the guy is also from the Philly area but lives in the Keys now.

The guy retired about two years ago as a judge in the Philly burbs.
Ironically I guess, my cousin is a retired drunk and drug addict who spent many nights in jails around the area.

So this judge and former career jailbird are sharing their jail stories.
It was mostly Bob doing the talking as it’s hard to get a word in once he gets going.
He’s been clean for 30 years now but whatever happened to him during that time really has him supercharged up when he has someone to talk to.

So we are all trading stories and it’s a good 90 minutes or so and he says he went out today because he recently lost his son and needed to get out.

He tells the waitperson to put our food on his tab.
Now these pizzas aren’t cheap. They are nearly $30 each plus our drinks.
I told him he didn’t have to do that but he insisted.
We went there to take Bob out for letting us stay at his house for a few days.

The man who I’ll call Joe, insisted and told me, He has been blessed with the ability to do this so he has no problem with it and actually likes to.

Ok.

So as we start to finish up and get ready to go,
the woman who was with him who I presume is a close friend was showing Bob something on her phone.

She was writing on her phone that Joe does this all the time and that he doesn’t usually tell people but there is a reason why he can pay for our dinner without blinking an eye about the price.

My wife gets up and he brings her close.

He says, “Do you remember anything on the news about a guy a couple years ago, who randomly bought a lottery ticket while buying something in a local store in the Keys? Well that was me.”

Turns out this man put ten bucks down while in the store with his buddies to get some ice or something.
Went back to his home in Pa and didn’t think anything of the ticket until he saw in the news that someone had won the lottery right when and where he bought a ticket.
This guy won a $291 million dollar power ball. He had the only ticket.

He took the lump sum.
gave some of it to his two buddies. 40 mil each after.

Now he’s telling us stories about adjusting to having all this money.
He has charities he gives to.
He buys whatever he wants.

Told me that a little while ago he was feeling a little off.
His manager told him to buy something.
Bought a set of clubs.

Didn’t work. So he went out and bought a Maserati.

He said he is still adjusting to being able to buy anything he needs.
His friend went out to the car to wait for Joe, she came back in because she left her phone on the bench. Joe and I joked that oh well whatever they just would have bought a new one anyway if she lost it.

They both really were the nicest people.
Before we new he was a millionaire we all just sat there and had a good old time just talking about things.

I was concerned that this guy was paying for our relatively expensive meal.

On the way out he and his friend gave us all a huge hug.
We thanked him again but he seemed to be really moved from being able to buy us dinner. It genuinely seemed that he enjoyed be able to do that. He thanked us.

And then that was it.

It so crazy how you never know who a stranger may be when you talk to someone you meet out in the world.

So random. If my wife and I go in the bar the first time it’s unlikely we go back the next day.
This place is just a simple little bar but this guy who can go anywhere in the world just happened to go in there while we were there.

More then anything I was just moved that someone who we just met wanted to pay for our dinner.
No one has ever done that for me and it was really a nice surprise in itself.

You never know who you are going to meet no matter where you are.

Sorry this was so long but I wanted to get it all in before I forgot it.

Come on, something else must have happened and you aren’t telling us. That can’t be the whole story.

Interesting story but felt like I was reading the lyrics of a song rather than a story. It is just strangely put together.

I was sure he was going to propose a three way. Perhaps a Devil’s Triangle.

I’m glad you had a great time, but you seem to have an attitude like you expected millionaires to be noticeably different. Like some Grey Poupon ad or something.

Also, it’s the Keys man. Jimmy Buffet probably hangs in that bar. People with money frequent dives.

Nice, you found the only great pizza in Florida.

Seriously though, nice story.

That was a lot more fun than the usual Penthouse Letters.

Maybe we could write the story into a song. We just need one of our board crooners to sing it.

No snark (for a change) ...

I really liked the story, but I thought the beautiful part was a retired judge and an ex-con sharing stories due to a hockey team t-shirt.

Thanks for the uplifting story whotony!

Glad I stuck with the story until the end! For a bit, I kept thinking there should be more rhyming.

Wonderful story, whotony, thank you for sharing it. Joe's heart was truly changed from a scarcity mindset to an abundance mindset and it's changed his life. Something tells me he already operated from at least some place of abundance before his windfall and I'm quite certain it will continue long after the money runs out, if that happens.

The pizza was one of the best I’ve had in Florida.

We live in SWF now and the best we’ve found is at a couple of bars.

The name of the place in the Keys is No Name bar.

Have you heard of pepperoni pizza?

It’s pizza with a lot of shrimp on it.
