YATT (Yet another Tipping thread) pickup and tip?

So seeing the delivery tipping thread had me wondering about what people do when you are picking up food at a restaurant with a full menu. i.e. not picking up at a pizza joint but lets say Indian or Chinese food, do you tip and if so is it a small tip of dollar or two? Typically I add a couple of bucks to the tip line but my wife rarely does.

If I'm picking up then I don't tip ever. They should be tipping me for picking up my own food. The gall.

If it's a mom and pop place I'll throw a buck or two, if I have it, in the jar.

I usually pay with a card and only add tip to the receipt if there was some above and beyond service.

Same. Chains I dont bother, but independent places? I sure do. Usually on the lower end (10-15%) but higher if its a holiday like New Years or whatever.

Not if I have to go in and get it, but usually a couple bucks if they bring it to the car.

Not sure what service they are providing that has not already been paid for?

Those who say yes, do you think you should just pay more for the food?

Re: YATT (Yet another Tipping thread) pickup and tip?

They’re putting them in containers (hopefully tight enough that they don’t spill, especially the liquidy food or soup), adding napkins, sometimes plastic utensils, and bagging it up so it’s easy to carry out with one hand. That’s more work than most waiters do. So yeah, I give them some extra cash for the trouble.

I've learned in these threads that Dan is way more generous than I.

Re: YATT (Yet another Tipping thread) pickup and tip?

Hell no

There's no extra service. Just like I don't tip a coffee shop. They hand me what I paid for. The end.

When I go pickup a pizza on the way home I usually drop some of the the change in the tip jar. It might be 5-10% at most.

Re: YATT (Yet another Tipping thread) pickup and tip?

I generally don't tip for pickup. I do wonder if I should, though, assuming the food is well packaged, and that tips are shared with kitchen staff.

Occasionally, I'll feel sorry for a kid working at Subway and drop a buck or two in the tip jar.

I'm not consistent, but usually throw a couple of bucks in there. Occasionally more, and occasionally nothing (but always feel guilty about it).

Re: YATT (Yet another Tipping thread) pickup and tip?

Why does chain vs. mom-and-pop make a difference? Tips go to the staff, not the owners. Or are we assuming that the staff are all the family that owns the place in a mom-and-pop?

couldn't you say the same thing about a restaurant? I mean, the menu has prices, and those are the prices for the plate delivered to your table (and include all the other things that come with eating there). In other words, what service are they providing that you didn't already pay for?

Tipping is a strange custom, and our standards for tipping are completely arbitrary, but as a fairly common "voluntary surcharge" to the listed price, they are all arbitrary. We can choose to say that we tip when the employees spend more time serving us, versus the barista that just dispenses our coffee, but conceptually, it's all the same damn thing; we're making a fairly arbitrary distinction.

Nope I don't feed the jar. The jar does not feed me.

Yeah, I always thought tipping was generally silly. I enjoyed being in foreign countries like Japan recently that don't have the custom at all.

I also agree with this. I'm not sure what makes carrying food from one end of a room to another and pouring a drink worth so much then other restaurant jobs.

What would I tip for if I drive my own car to their location and pick up my own food? Someone putting my stuff in a bag? That's just nuts.

Don't be such a cheapskate. Everyone drops a sawbuck in the tip jar at Subway!

No tip for pickup

But I did one time before, only because the waitress who took my order was kinda hot, and I had some dollars to spare haha
