Night Owls, you are probably going to die soon. Sorry.

https://www.eurekalert.org/pub_relea...-noh040918.php

CHICAGO --- "Night owls" -- people who like to stay up late and have trouble dragging themselves out of bed in the morning -- have a higher risk of dying sooner than "larks," people who have a natural preference for going to bed early and rise with the sun, according to a new study from Northwestern Medicine and the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom (UK).

The study, on nearly half a million participants in the UK Biobank Study, found owls have a 10 percent higher risk of dying than larks. In the study sample, 50,000 people were more likely to die in the 6 -year period sampled.

"Night owls trying to live in a morning lark world may have health consequences for their bodies," said co-lead author Kristen Knutson, associate professor of neurology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

Previous studies in this field have focused on the higher rates of metabolic dysfunction and cardiovascular disease, but this is the first to look at mortality risk.

The study will be published April 12 in the journal Chronobiology International.

The scientists adjusted for the expected health problems in owls and still found the 10 percent higher risk of death.

"This is a public health issue that can no longer be ignored," said Malcolm von Schantz, a professor of chronobiology at the University of Surrey. "We should discuss allowing evening types to start and finish work later, where practical. And we need more research about how we can help evening types cope with the higher effort of keeping their body clock in synchrony with sun time."

My condolences in advance. Now, if you'll excuse me, it is after 10:30 and I should be in bed.

I took the severence from working at Amazon, because I was genuinely scared that I was hurting my health working until 3am. I'm on the 12-8am sleep schedule now, but still wish I could get up earlier. Look up any medical study about night shifters and I went through every problem it causes.

Re: Night Owls, you are probably going to die soon. Sorry.

Correlation does not equal causation. There are about a million additional variables this "study" could not account for, like the fact that night-owls, being more active at night, when it is DARK outside might be naturally exposed to greater risks which are 'inherent' in their lifestyle. Also, they tend to be younger; I've never met a nighowl over the age of 50, it seems. So yonger = more risky lifestyle, although they could possibly normalize somehow for that.

So, I call total bullshit on the study. Most nightowls that I've known have almost opposite personalities and activity loads as the "morning lark" people. So, one naturally might live longer, but the issue is moot since it's a lifestyle consequence, not an inherent consequence of choosing to sleep between 4 am and 12pm vs 9pm to 5am. Sleep is sleep and there are 24 hours in a day. It's the *quality* of sleep that matters, NOT when it occurs by the clock. I think most people could be healthier by getting MORE sleep rather than less, as the case seems to be. 6-7 hours is healthier than 4-5 hours a night.

I'd rather be dead than up at 6am anyway.

Next they'll be inventing some rhymes promoting this hysteria...something like "Early to bed; early to rise / Makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise" or some other such nonsense.

Been working 10pm to 9am four days a week for a little over a year now. I agree with everything the dude in the video said on a personal level even if the study glosses over the variables others have mentioned.

Re: Night Owls, you are probably going to die soon. Sorry.

I'm a night owl because I now work from home and don't have to worry about long commute times to the office. Because of that, I'm actually getting more sleep than when I was going to bed earlier - and as a result I'm in much better shape and have more energy.

It really doesn't matter when you go to bed. What matters is how much sleep you get, and how much you take care of yourself when you're awake.

My wife and I are most definitely larks, in bed by 9 or 9:30 most nights, and we really like it that way.

As my dear great-aunt used to say, "anything that can't be done before 10pm shouldn't be done"!

So the problem isn't that they are night owls. The problem is that employers demand that night owls be at work at 7:30 AM. Or in my case, at 6:00 AM.

I think that was what the article was getting at. Everyone is wired differently, ideally the best for me would be eight hours sleep between 3am to 11am, that feels best for me but my work schedule means I have to shift that a bit (I usually wake up at 8:30, if I had to wake up much earlier than that on a regular basis it would be hard on me). I've read about various studies that said the worst thing is working a shift where you are forced to sleep at a schedule that is more than slightly different from your body's internal clock, what ever that may be.

I'm glad I'm a morning person. Get more shit done and it's less crowded. I worked for months on the graveyard shift. Messed my body up. I like the sunlight. My body likes sunlight.
