Why can't people figure out doors?

It's a regular problem. I've seen it for years.

People can't figure out how to open doors.

Example from today. Woman gets to the Post Office door ahead of me, and pushes on the wrong side of the door. She pauses, actually looks the door over, then pushes the wrong side again. Finally, she presses wheelchair button, and it opens.

From Tuesday. An artist has an appointment to come to the gallery and pick up his stuff. I'm there. Door is unlocked, lights are on, "open" sign is in the window. I'm working on stuff while I wait for him. I notice movement out of the corner of my eye, and see him with his face to the glass of the door, hands cupped around his eyes. I smile and wave, and he makes a sort of questioning expression, and points at the door handle. I KNOW it's unlocked, so I sort of push my hand toward it at him. He pulls the door handle, and seems surprised when it opens. "Oh, you're open." he says.

My old location, almost every day, people were baffled by my door. It was antique, and had a thumb latch. This was a little lower down than most modern doorknobs. I could have understood if it was young people not knowing how a thumb latch works, but people couldn't even FIND the latch.

When you leave the building, do you go in the out door or in the outdoors?

Re: Why can't people figure out doors?

When I go up to a door, I glance upward with my eyes to see which way the mechanism or hinges are going so when I get to the handle I can push or pull with impunity.

Always look smart. Always look up.

What kills me is elevators and subways. The people who try to step on before letting people off first . . . have they never been on an elevator before, or are they genuinely surprised at the order of events each time?

My door peeve: if you are closing an interior door within a house, especially at night, for god's sake, turn the knob and slowly close the door. Am I the only one who has had house guests who don't do this and I hear the bedroom door next to mine almost slam shut in the middle of the night after the guest has returned from using the bathroom.

I trained myself to always close doors quietly. Except maybe when I have groceries in my hands or something. But I got really good at it. Probably all that apartment living.

I once had some apartment drama. Someone was fed up with one of us slamming the door all the time. They wrote a nasty letter and posted it on everyone's door (probably 10 of us). Weird...

I also once had neighbors that fought non-stop. Like, every day, they screamed at each other for three hours. And I could hear most of it (though it was all muffled).

I just don't like when buildings put pull handles on push doors. That shit confuses me occasionally.

Re: Why can't people figure out doors?

I've said this before about single use public restroom doors. You'll be in there with the door locked and someone else comes up to the door but can't get in because the door is locked. They never assume the reason the door won't open is because someone is in there and locked it. They have to forceibly rock the door by the handle or slamming there shoulder into to try and get the door open because they aren't smart enough to deduct that someone is in there.

One time I was in a locked restroom and a Mexican woman comes up to the door. After maybe two seconds she realizes the door is locked but then assumes that no one is in there and it was locked by mistake. So what does she do? She picks the lock and opens the door.

In a public building, I ALWAYS assume that a door opens OUTWARD for fire safety. This has been a law, well, like, forever, hasn't it? In a private house, I look at the way the door is built and have never had a problem. Common sense is no longer very common at all.

Same with hotel room doors. It amazes me how often people will just let their door slam shut instead of closing it gently.

Re: Why can't people figure out doors?

A long time ago, I was using a stall and someone came along and started jiggling the door presumably because they couldn't figure out why it was locked. Next thing I know, I hear this godawful karate sound followed by a kick to the door which sent it flying open. The person realized I was in there and took off.
