Re: Would you pay a fee to watch YouTube?
For example, if a patron pledged $5 a month, most show runners were eating the costs out of that $5 (e.g., a 25 cent charge per transaction + 5% of the pledge). Patreon took those costs and added them to the pledge, so now that person would have been paying the $5 pledge, the 25 cent fee, and the extra 5%.
They were basically trying to discourage the little $1-$2 pledges that most podcasters thrive on.
EDIT TO ADD: Here it is ... it was tacking on 2.9% + a 35 cent transaction fee.
This isn't an updated article, but it explains it pretty well: https://www.digitalmusicnews.com/201...s-controversy/
You’ll pay 2.9% + 35 cents. So, on a $1 pledge, you’ll pay $1.38. On a $10 pledge you’ll pay $10.60

I personally prefer visuals. I've used YouTube on many occasions in preparation for my travels overseas. I've gone to many sites, restaurants and attractions in Asia based off travel Vlogs I've watched from YouTube. It's been said a few times already, many of the videos and Vlogs are professionally done, edited with graphics and animations. Yeah there is still crappy produced junk, but the quality of the content on there has improved immensely in the last decade or so.
I get it for some of you money is tight and YouTube for many of you is just a time waster and not really used for actual entertainment or information so spending money on it is not appealing.
I personally just don't have the budget to spend money on ad free YouTube right now, but I find it the application to be very useful and informative. I look up travel vlogs and other forms on infotainment all the time there.
Some people here don't like him, but I'm a fan of Chris Stuckmann's movie reviews. They're very well thought out, informative and use b-roll from the actual movie he's talking about and they're shot in HD. I assume he actually gets clearance from the studios to use the movie b-roll in it. He's actually very funny sometimes. They're pretty close to being an actual TV quality. I've seen some shitty ones with just a guy talking on his cell phone giving his 2 cents.

Am i the only one that initially thought YouTube Red was something like Redtube?
I had never heard of it until it was mentioned in this thread.

I use YouTube now in the same manner as I used to channel surf when I owned cable: It's a dumb waste of time. No way would I pay for it (unless they allowed prOn)

As a music fan, I love YT. Lots of concert footage, older promo videos and musician interviews, etc. I've found video clips that I never thought I'd see again in a million years. Just for that I'd throw them a few bucks a month (but admittedly, not much more than that).
Also, it great for help with DIY projects.

Not a chance I'd pay a dime for Youtube or any other website.

Agree. It's incredible how much great music is at one's fingertips on YT. I have listened to and discovered so many artists, especially Jazz. Concert footage is great too, from recent shows to old one's. One night I listened to about five Scarlet Begonias -> Fire by the Dead from over the decades, not sure where else i could do that so easily. Also, it's great for extended 12" from the '80's.
Also, it great for help with DIY projects.

I get Red as part of Google Play Music (which is the best streaming service around, IMO). Would I pay for YT separately? Yes, but only if pay to creators went up. I'd say YouTube is 80% of my video watching. There's so much good content.

Re: Would you pay a fee to watch YouTube?
I had a free trial of YouTube Red for 3 months and saw no difference aside from there being no ads on my TV's app, which usually lets you skip them anyways.
The whole point of YouTube, at least from the beginning, was that it was people putting stuff up just because they wanted people to SEE it, not because they were out to make money off of it. I've posted hundreds of clips from my massive media collection for that reason- I'm just happy that it gets seen by thousands of people instead of being just stuck in my closet (or floors as the case may be!)
If anything, I thought we'd eventually have to pay to upload stuff to YouTube, and I was uploading stuff pretty fast when I figured out how because I thought eventually they'd at least put a limit on it. I still don't know where all of this video goes physically.
While there is a lot of crap on YouTube, I'm glad that they keep it unfiltered for the most part- just let people skip over videos they don't want to watch. I do wish there was less content restriction as porn (either rare vintage or recent homemade) would be nice to have at least as an option and not overrun the whole site.
Speaking of unfiltered, I can't tell if this guy is really retarded or if he's doing some sort of Andy Kaufman thing- as a media collector/hoarder I find this amusingly stupid, and he's done several of these:

Doh! Was hoping that was for “dead” shows as in off the air and not in syndication shows. But it’s Grateful Dead shows for anyone as confused as I.

Your post sent me down a horrid rabbit hole, because that dude is not the only one to make videos like this. I'm only 99% sure it's a joke, but that 1% keeps me watching more.

Re: Would you pay a fee to watch YouTube?
I have no problem with folks making a living wage (Or more) on YouTube or Patreon or whatever. If their content is good, they're earning it just like any other documentarians, entertainers, etc. The problem is that the top-tier YouTubers are trash, making a killing, and YouTube has essentially zero ethics policies in place; or of they do, they only enforce them subjectively. So people like Logan fucking Paul can make countless videos okay for kids, then post a video showing and making fun of an actual dead body hanging from a tree and YouTube doesn't take any action against his account.
