Yeah, I haven't been there in over 10 years, but if I remember correctly, wasn't that a forum where they required you to use your full, real name as a username? (one of several ways in which that forum was tight-assed).

Yes, true, but anyone can start a bogus email account under the name George Dawson, Phyllis Detweiler, or whatever. Who's going to prove it's a pseudonym, unless it's a paid account? I can't recall if Mobius only accepted paid email accounts.

Wow, I didn't think my join date was 99, but I just saw that it was. I remember the old days of 800.com, Reel.com, supercertificates, ******, and the like. Now all my DVDs are boxed up and everything is running off a 5TB Plex drive.

What is this "password" of which you speak? I haven't logged in in years.

Mine's the original password. Six characters but it does have a mix of numbers & letters (upper & lowercase)

Yeah, but I wasn't bright enough to think of something like that back then.

Joined almost 10 years ago when I was 17. How time flies. Or better yet, I should probably say I've been lurking for 10 years with my post count.

If I had a baby the day I joined, I'd be pissed considering my kids are grown and I've been snipped for a long, long time. I don't even touch babies just in case that crap is contagious.

Jeez. I saw people doxed on Usenet in the 1990s. Here's your home phone number. Your mother's name and address. Your employer's name and phone number. Your license plate. Don't mess with me, buster, or I'll get rough. I started with a pseudonym.

Yeah, I was a little late to the Internet (started around 1998), and nave. Which brings me to a little tangent that has been bugging me for years: Early in the millennium, a young guy graduated university and started spamming his resume to thousands of people. I can't remember most of the details, but some older guy (who I think was employed at a Montreal university) who received the kid's spam started a website called something like "_________ is an asshole.com". It became one of those Internet sagas, with the kid threatening the other guy with lawsuits, and so forth. Anyone remember the specifics? I'm sure we discussed it here with a great deal of Schadenfreude.

Re: If I had a baby the day I joined DVDTalk...

I am glad I had my actual kids before I joined here .. otherwise, I would have been too busy buying and watching DVDs to have them

I joined when I got my first professional IT job ... part of which was to be in the office at 6 and run a bunch of scripts and generate a slew of useless reports before 10AM when most people rolled in. I automated the shit out of that and had about 4 hours of alone time on high speed internet ... compared to my dial up at home ... to spend here and buy movies.

Re: If I had a baby the day I joined DVDTalk...

I just realized my most significant contribution to the inter webs is probably my post - "I'm in love... with a TV commercial girl!" 799k views, 1800 replies, started the thread in October of 2008. That is my legacy, and I'm proud of it.

And I haven't even seen any TV commercials within at least 15 years of 2008.

You haven't found your tv in 10 of those years.

Re: If I had a baby the day I joined DVDTalk...

I did have a baby (well, my then-wife did) not too long after I joined here.
I commemorated it with a thread called 'I'm a Daddy'. I think that thread didn't make it to the archives.

He's 15 now, and I have since been through a divorce and am remarrying this Saturday.

I'm old. And probably using my original password.

Re: If I had a baby the day I joined DVDTalk...

DVDTalk has been the main site to cost me the most money over the years. But think of all the money I saved! (at least that's what I tell myself as I slowly sell off my collection as physical media dies. )

My only kid wasn't born until 2004 so I was deep into DVDTalk before him.

I still remember sometimes checking the site in the middle of the night just to make sure I didn't miss some crazy deal or misprice...which seemed to happen quite a bit all those years ago.

I still read the site regularly now but mainly just the political forum. And I can go several days without checking...which I never did until a couple of years ago.

Anyone around in the early days has to remember those insane deals and price mistakes. Those REEL.com coupons and all multiple accounts to use them time and time again. It was the perfect storm; a new and revolutionary medium with the internet boom and loss leader pricing in exchange for ad revenue.

No kidding. If you weren't checking the forum every hour you were missing some crazy deal.

My best score was one of the early X-Files seasons when they released at $150. After a pre-order discount, 50% off coupons, $10 stackable coupons, brands4less and ******, I got one season for under $10 on launch day.
