Does anyone still use a clock radio as an alarm?

I was in a few hotels over the past couple of months (some of them high end properties) and noticed that some of them have done away with clocks. Now there is a bluetooth speaker that you can connect your phone with charging stations etc.

I guess they want you to use your phone as an alarm, and check the time.

This got me thinking - at home I still use my clock radio that I have had since I was a kid as an alarm.. the one that you have to hold down "time" and then use the slow or fast buttons to set your alarm, time, etc.

I like just rolling over and seeing the time quickly.

However - I assume most people just use their phone for alarms, etc.

Personally, I have made a good habit of not bringing my phone into the bedroom - I leave it next to my keys as soon as I get home and don't check it once I am home (unless I want to text someone etc.) - but for the most part I disconnect when I get home.

What do you guys do?

I have one of those things that slowly lights up over 15 minutes and plays soothing music. It works pretty well but I do use my phone as a back up alarm.

20 year old General Electric clock radio with the loudest and most annoying alarm, guaranteed to wake anyone up.
About as loud and annoying as that sound Jim Carrey makes in Dumb and Dumber. You can hear it throughout the whole house.

I use Alexa as an alarm but I do still have a clock radio as well... but really I only use it because it projects the time on the ceiling and as much as I always thought that was a gimmicky kinda thing it's actually the best part of it.

Loud and annoying, what alarm clocks need to be.

My wife still uses her's as her main alarm. It's the bane of my existence, as she's a snooze button operator.

Re: Does anyone still use a clock radio as an alarm?

We have two clock radios in our bedroom. My wife's has USB chargers for her phone/tablet - I leave my phone downstairs, so I don't hear it in case work calls. On the rare occasion that i need to wake at a time other than one of the two settings on my clock radio, I use my Echo Dot so as not to have to fuck with the settings.

I have a plain alarm clock. I don't sleep well, and I like being able to see the time in the middle of the night. It's a nuisance to have to grab my phone and press the button when I want to see the time.

I use an alarm clock with an ancient iPod Classic playing music as my alarm. Try to keep my phone out of the bedroom.

Still using my nearly 20 year old Sony "Dream Machine" clock radio. I never keep any kind of phone in the bedroom.

Re: Does anyone still use a clock radio as an alarm?

I have been thinking about getting a little clock radio. I have mixed feelings about having my phone so close to me and whether it's the first thing in the morning and last thing at night that gets my attention. I usually don't go with the whole vintage/modern device, but if I could find a company that makes an old school flip style clock radio that also does bluetooth, etc., I think I'd probably buy it.

My dad had almost this exact radio in his workshop. It migrated to my room in high school. Long since lost, but I loved that clock. Maybe it's because it's my dad's, I don't know. But whenever I see this clip, I smile and think about my dad and that radio:

I use my phone mainly but I do have a iPod docking clock/radio that my parents got me probably around ten years ago. Still use it on occasion.

I'm pretty sure that's what I have. Mine's probably closer to 25 years old.The thing just won't die.

I switched to my Fitbit a few months ago and use the alarm clock as a backup.

10 year old Sony "Dream Machine" Clock/Radio. Like others, I enjoy being able to set two alarms and not have my phone in the bedroom.

I have a regular clock radio at home. If I'm in a hotel room, I just use my smartphone as an alarm clock.

Re: Does anyone still use a clock radio as an alarm?

I bought this back on Amazon in 2000 - Aiwa FRA37 AM/FM Clock Radio with Dual Alarm (sniff, so sad...no longer available for purchase) when I wanted a digital clock that was easy to read when I am blurry eyed, and had a nice loud alarm. I do not use the radio portion. I love it...not sure if I have really been using the one in my bedroom for going on 17 years, but yeah, that just might be the case.

Funny, the two amazon reviews complain it is too bright and has to be pushed away from their line of sight to get sleep, the precise reason why I love it...easy to set loud alarm, big ass digital numbers/letters and bright enough to make out with one blurry eye open a crack to check the time to see if I can sleep some more. The brightness never bothered me and I love my sleep (I have slept through less than 3.0 earthquakes centered not far from where I sleep).

If this ever breaks I might shed a tear.

Re: Does anyone still use a clock radio as an alarm?

Yeah, I do currently. Though I may be a pretentious twat and replace it with an Amazon Echo Spot, mostly so I can yell at my clock to adjust the AC and turn the lights off.

I, too, use an ancient clock radio.

When I travel I always call the front desk to arrange a wake-up call.
