I am oversimplifying: Land-based for communications and satellite for GPS.

Looks like Cellular.. uses GPS for location but not communication.

OnStar Service works using cellular or other wireless phone networks in the continental United States, Alaska, Hawaii and Canada, as well as the Global Positioning System (‘GPS’) satellite network.

The Keys consist of a long strip, maybe a half-mile wide, with the Atlantic Ocean on one side and either the Florida Bay or the Gulf of Mexico on the other. There's only one main highway in or out, and if there's traffic or an accident nobody is going ANYWHERE for hours. Also it's pretty much directly at sea level. A heavy storm will wipe it off the map.

Now to address why people don't leave: if you're in South FL there's nowhere to go. The storm is poised to hit anywhere in the state. Miami to Tallahassee is a nine hour drive in the best of traffic conditions. To get to Georgia is 6 hours in the same conditions. Even if you up and evac to St. Augustine, the hurricane path could wobble and put you directly at Ground Zero. No bueno.

Leaving your house isn't always the best solution. If you leave, getting back might take hours or even days longer. If your house is compromised, you won't be able to protect it from looters or rising flood waters.

Which gets to my main point: THE DANGER IS NOT IN THE STORM. It's in the aftermath. I survived Andrew in 92 (Cat-5) and while there were a few fatalities, nobody died during the Hurricane itself. You're actually, with a few exceptions, quite safe in your house. The few fatalities came after the storm passed -- stress-related heart attacks, people stepping on power lines, crushed by cutting trees the wrong way, etc. During the storm we were bunkered down and safe from the elements. And when the worst had passed, we were able to assess the damage and start the clean-up.

The only people who REALLY need to evacuate are those who live on or very near the coast to avoid the heavy flooding.
Good post, great points. I had to evacuate because I live in the coast and it was mandatory on my area. Had to drive all the way to Pensacola to find a room available we must have called a hundred. We drove at night and there a lot of traffic and cars on the sideways that ran out of gas. If I had shutters I probably would had stayed put. I would not recommend anybody driving out at this point. You be putting yourself in more harm

The wife and I bought two 20,000 milliamp Power banks. That will get us 3 recharges on our phones. Only problem is the cell towers will run out of generator in about a day. I'm almost sure we will lose power on this one.

Yeah the cone keeps shifting a little to the west.. which is good for Miami but bad for you. But I think it's still a bit too far out for them to really know. These things tend to move suddenly. It'll be Saturday night before anyone really knows for sure (at least according to the weather folks on the Miami station I'm watching).

What sport's stadium's in Florida are Hurricane-Proof?

They said that the New Orleans Superdome was Hurricane-Proof and that didn't turn out to be true.

I heard them say the other day that there was no building where they could ensure safety from this hurricane.

This is rolling right over Cuba. Can't imagine what that aftermath is going to look like.

Re: Hurricane Irma 2017

I think I'll be able to make the shelter vs ride it out at home call by Sun Morning. If it hits Naples or east I think my area will make it (since it will hit here as a Cat 1-2). If it tacks all the way out to the Dry Tortugas, it will likely hit Tampa Bay as a Cat 4-5 and my house will not survive that. Look at what Charley did to Punta Gorda in 2004. Literally took houses off the foundations. I'm not sticking around in a wood frame house to see what a Cat 4-5 looks like. Just packed my bug out bag.

Down here in Broward County, the shelters have been full since this morning. They keep opening new ones, and they fill up quickly. And the storm won't even hit until tomorrow.

Don't say that. My mom is so stressed out, dad is already regretting buying a place there. At least it's not even really furnished yet. They didn't get flood insurance, sounds like it'd be better to have roof and window damage than "just" flood damage from the storm surge (for insurance purposes)?

Re: Hurricane Irma 2017

Well my wife is really distressed and losing it...two of sisters live in Ft Myers and of course a few days ago based on the projection they were going to ride it out....now it looks like they'll get the direct hit and too late to get out. One who lives a bit lower than the other did try to leave but they ran out of gas and had to call a tow truck to take them back home because gas is out everywhere. I think they're about 25 miles from ocean but I don't think it's going to matter with possible 5-12ft surge.

Nothing is Hurricane Proof. If I were to go anywhere, I'd beeline to the Hollywood Hard Rock Casino. It's massive, got backup generators, and plenty of food, water, and booze. Plus I work for the Tribe so I could always hit up the Employee Dining Room backstage.

Oy but your incorrect use of apostrophes is giving me sciatica #GrammarGestapo

Well I'm sorry to hear that and the other bad news from our other forum members. Earthquakes, hurricanes, flooding, and wildfires all over the place. Everyone make a bug out bag, help as many people as you can and donate if you can't help personally.

That is what our family talked about, helping out around the neighborhood and see where we can volunteer. I don't like playing the victim card, and looks like there will be a a lot of help needed.

Re: Hurricane Irma 2017

Our local brewery was giving away crowlers of water, I think it's all the prep I'll be needing

All the grocery stores got new deliveries of water and canned foods, so it's actually been easy thanks to everyone prepping so early this time. Especially now that it looks like we'll mostly be spared.
