Explain to my why one's bad, and the other is good.

Why is a hamburger "bad for you"

when steak and salad with bread is not.

Re: Explain to my why one's bad, and the other is good.

Hamburger is usually more fatty, has more cholesterol than steak. Hamburger buns are usually worse than side-bread (that's variable though), burgers usually come with lots of cheese.

But you're kinda doing a strawman - there are all kinds of salads and burgers - there are plenty of burgers that are healthy, and there are plenty of salads that are not at all healthy (usually due to the dressing and accoutrements, like cheese and croutons, etc.)

Re: Explain to my why one's bad, and the other is good.

In my experience (see my smug posts in the exercise thread), pretty-much all food is unhealthy. You can't eat your way out of being unhealthy. You can eat all the salmon-avocado salads and burritos you want ... topped with olive oil and kale. Or all the steak and veggie dinners you want.

If you care about being 'healthy', eat tiny (very tiny) portions and exercise every muscle group every day or two. Little-to-no salt, sugar, or carbs.

If you are getting a steak from Bonanza/Sizzler they are probably the same.

Ah, a Strawman...so delicious. That's why horses are as healthy as a horse.

What is straw, anyway? Is it the same as hay? Why do cows and donkeys eat that shit? How do magnets work? What becomes of the brokenhearted?

A hamburger is not inherently bad for you, nor is a steak and salad and bread inherently not bad for you.

With hamburgers, you really don't know what part of the cow the meat comes from. People freaked out about this during the mad-cow scare.

Most quality gourmet burger places ground their meat fresh on the premises. One place I love primarily uses dry-aged rib-eye - it's super fatty, but the meat all comes from the same chunk of steak. Another place does the same thing, only they wrap the meat as it's coming out of the girder, imediately forming the patties, with the the ground meat standing vertically, as the butter they melt on it oozes through the strands of meat while it's cooking.

See the strands on the edge of this burger? That's a fresh ground, which was put on the grill the second after it came out of the grinder!

Funny I've been hearing both were bad for you for most of my life. Red meat and bread (carbs) are always brought up as the thing you shouldn't eat a lot of.

Re: Explain to my why one's bad, and the other is good.

Hamburger - high fat/no carb (ground beef) + high carb (buns) = unhealthy and you get fat faster.

Steak w/ salad + bread - fat/no carb (red meat) + almost low carb (few small square bread) = unhealthy but you won't get fat faster.

Really, if you want to stay healthy, exercise is the way to go. But stay away from hamburger.

Is the burger really worse? I suppose a lean steak could be better, but most of what I buy is pretty marbled. And I butter my bread. Plus, I tend to eat more if it's a steak dinner--a hamburger bun is self limiting, and a quarter to a third pound tops for the burger. Fries are bad, but so is a loaded baked potato.

Troy Stiffler, is this what you have been led to believe, and you are trying to be healthy by living this way??....... Or are you actually living this way that you explained in a sustainable manner, and are infact healthy?

Fat, but hopefully healthy. Been exercising for eight months (otherwise new to the whole gym/fitness thing). Significant weight loss.

I've been eating healthy/foodie type food for 10+ years (it's just what I like). I can put it like this ... there's no combination of organic non-GMO hippy shit sandwich/salad-bar at Whole Foods that won't make you fat. At least, that's how it is for me. Only thing that's ever worked for me is no sugar/carbs and eating tiny portions.

One f'n slice of pizza and I'm ruined. Pizza just absorbs into my gut when I touch it. Like the T-1000 picking up some liquid metal.

Re: Explain to my why one's bad, and the other is good.

Because pizza has way more cheese and bread (fat & carbs/sugar) than you need. The meat (pepperoni, sausage) is usually fatty, full of cholesterol & salt, and what little veggies that are on there are insignificant and cooked to the point of losing most of the benefits they may have. Pizza may very well be the most unhealthy food you can eat.

Re: Explain to my why one's bad, and the other is good.

So, just to arbitrarily pick a restaurant with readily available nutritional information, I went to TGIFriday's web page and looked at their nutritional info.

Their "Really Good Cheeseburger" with a side of fries has:

1240 calories
69g Fat
27g Saturated
2g Transfat
86g Carbs
8g Fiber
45g Protein

The Rib-Eye (which includes mashed potatoes and broccoli) has:

960 calories
58g Fat
24g Saturated
0g Transfat
33g Carbs
8g Fiber
72g Protein

So with the steak, you're getting about 25% fewer calories and about 20% less fat. Either way, you're getting roughly twice the RDA of saturated fats (saturated fats are bad for heart health), but you're getting slightly more with the burger and you're also getting trans fats, which are the worst for you healthwise. Plus, the burger gives you significantly more carbs, which tend to promote weight gain.

As for the "why," as others have pointed out, burgers tend to use fattier cuts of meat, and come with lots of rich cheeses, sauces, and add-ons (bacon, for example).
