OJ Simpson gets July 20 parole hearing date in Nevada. [UPDATE: PAROLED!]

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Imprisoned former football star O.J. Simpson has a July 20 parole hearing that could have him released from a Nevada prison on Oct. 1, a state parole official said.

Simpson, now 70, has served more than eight years of a nine-to-33 year sentence imposed after he was found guilty in 2008 of armed robbery, kidnapping and other charges stemming from a confrontation with two sports memorabilia dealers at a Las Vegas casino hotel in September 2007.

Simpson is due to appear by videoconference from Lovelock Correctional Center, where he is being held, before a panel of four parole commissioners sitting in Carson City, parole official David Smith said.

Simpson’s attorney in Las Vegas, Malcolm LaVergne, said Monday he will be with his client at the medium-security prison in a small town 90 miles northeast of Reno.

“If he’s able to get parole, my prediction is he’s going to want to live a quiet life,” LaVergne said in a recent interview. LaVergne declined additional comment until after the proceeding.

Simpson has always maintained he was trying to retrieve personal mementoes stolen from him following his 1995 acquittal in the killings of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ronald Goldman in Los Angeles.

He said family photos and other items disappeared before a judge in February 1997 found him liable for the deaths of Goldman and Nicole Brown Simpson and ordered him to pay $33.5 million to their estates.

Ten years later, the hall-of-fame football star, actor and advertising pitchman was living in Miami when he and several friends hatched a plan with a middleman to meet the collectibles sellers in a room at the Palace Station hotel-casino.

Simpson and five others were later arrested. Four co-defendants pleaded guilty before trial to felony charges and testified for the prosecution. Two told jurors they brought and displayed guns, although Simpson insisted he never knew anyone was armed.

Simpson and Clarence “C.J.” Stewart stood trial. Both were found guilty in October 2008 of charges also including assault with a deadly weapon, burglary and conspiracy.

Stewart was sentenced to 7˝ to 27 years in state prison. He served 27 months before the Nevada Supreme Court ruled that Simpson’s fame tainted the jury and that Stewart should have been tried separately.

“There was something that did happen with those nine people in that small room,” Stewart, now 63, said Tuesday from his home in Louisiana. “But I didn’t think the charges or the crime really fit the sentence. He didn’t need to be in that long.”

It's beyond obvious he killed Brown and Goldman. But this sentence is grossly disproportionate to the crime and obviously levied by the judge to make up for the acquittal. He'll get out, and if he's smart, just lay as low as possible.

Keep him locked up, so that he doesn't murder any more pretty white women!

That's axiomatic. No doubt about it. The guy should serve the full 33 years, payback time for the "one that got away."

After what's been reported in the media in the last few years about NFL brain damage, I wonder if OJ got brain damage from too many hard hits. I mean, it seems like he's become stupid and flies into violent rages. Those are both symptoms of being punch drunk. He used to have it together enough to work in movies and television commercials, and then get asked back.

Armed robbery and kidnapping are rather serious offenses. That's why he got such a tough sentence. Most states regard kidnapping very serious, and there's a historical (maybe even political) reference for such a tough stance on it in the US. In addition, armed robbery is a violent crime, one of the worst.

Pair those two crimes together (along with the other counts--there were 10 or so total I think) and you get a sentence that is actually not entirely as unjustifiable as one would think. Because the sentence is "9 to 33", which gives a lot of room for good behavior and whatever else to allow for a person to get out at around 9 to 10 years of serving the sentence.

P.S. He's not smart. He'll get into trouble again. Of course at this point, it will probably be taking lunch money from nursing home residents.

I don't think he has the energy to get in trouble again. I think he's going to just fade away.

In the final part of the OJ: Made in America documentary one of his scumbag defense lawyers from the Brown/Goldman case says the sentence for the Vegas charges were 2 years "dripping wet." I remember thinking when he said that "Really? Armed robbery, hostage taking and theft.....2 years max?"

Of course he killed Brown and Goldman, and i think if he gets out this year he has gotten off lightly with the shit he has pulled. There should be no doubt in anyones mind that he murdered those two people and his lawyers managed to make the case about race and got the jury to ignore the facts. The Prosecution also made a lot of slip ups, but he wriggled out when he was guilty. Utter scumbag.

I agree that two years is very light, but the judge very inappropriately considered OJ's acquittal when sentencing. Look at what the other involved parties got and try to tell me that's not true:

O. J. Simpson: Sentenced to prison for 9 to 33 years.

Walter Alexander: Accomplice of Simpson's. Brought a gun into the room. Sentenced to probation.[12]

Clarence "C. J." Stewart: Accomplice of Simpson's. Drove the Lincoln Navigator getaway car. Stood by Simpson during the trial and did not negotiate a plea deal. Judge Jackie Glass sentenced Stewart, the only Simpson cohort who didn't negotiate a plea deal, to 15 years in prison, eligible for parole after 7 and a 1/2 years. The conviction was later overturned because the verdict was tainted by Simpson's fame, and Stewart was released after a plea deal with time served.[12]

Charles Cashmore: Accomplice of Simpson's. Introduced himself as a friend of Stewart's. Carried items out of the room. First met Simpson on the day of the robbery. Sentenced to probation.[12]

Charles Ehrlich: Accomplice of Simpson's. Friend of Simpson's from South Florida. Pretended to be a buyer who would first check out the goods. Sentenced to probation.[12]

Michael McClinton: Accomplice of Simpson's. Acquaintance of Alexander's and Stewart's. Brought a gun into the room. Sentenced to probation. Also made an audio recording of events that was later used at trial. In the room, McClinton pulled out a .45-caliber Ruger and barked orders at the dealers, as Simpson reportedly told him to do. Afterward in the hallway McClinton secretly taped Simpson asking whether McClinton pulled out "the piece." On the recording the participants are heard at a sushi restaurant laughing about the six-minute encounter.[12] Sentenced to probation.[12]

Classy DVDtalk. We have people that voted in the poll to let him out. Why should I be fucking surprised. This should be a public poll.

I didn't vote in the poll, but the only justification to keep him in prison at this point is based on his acquittal in another case. I don't think our legal system should work like that.

I'm torn between wanting him to stay in jail for the safety of everyone on society..

Or to let him out so he can reprise his role as Nordberg..

Nor do I think people should get out after serving only 9 years of a 33 year sentence. But I guess the legal system works both ways.

The crimes he was convicted on do not convey this.

Do you normally want people to get 2 years for armed robbery and kidnapping?

Do you understand the legal gravity of an ARMED ROBBERY and KIDNAPPING CHARGE?

That's why most people don't do this shit. Because it's bad. It is a direct injury to society. And you can get serious prison time for it.

Also, there was ample evidence to convict. Not just innuendo or rumors. But actual evidence. The gun. The witnesses. The confessions by other accomplices, etc.

It's almost like you have no idea what the facts of the case are.

He was sentenced to 9 to 33 years. He's been in for 9. Explain how he shouldn't be eligible for release under the terms of his sentence.

And how on earth do you explain how a person with ZERO criminal record gets sentenced to that length when the others involved - including the person WHO DREW THE FUCKING GUN - got only probation or time served?

And how do you explain how the Nevada Supreme Court recognized that OJ's fame played a role in the unconstitutional sentencing of one of the accomplices?

You can't, other that this judge wanted to get OJ for what LA couldn't - the murders.

You don't believe in the rule of law. You want mob justice. That's just sad.

re: OJ Simpson gets July 20 parole hearing date in Nevada. [UPDATE: PAROLED!]

Galanter, Simpson's attorney, said just as much during the trial. That OJ was the victim, that he was being targeted by the law.

http://www.cnn.com/2008/CRIME/10/04/oj.simpson.verdict/

"Every cooperator, every person who had a gun, every person who had an ulterior motive, every person who signed a book deal, every person who got paid money, the police, the district attorney's office is only interested in one thing: Mr. Simpson," Galanter said
An argument can be made that OJ's infamy got him more time, but that was up to OJ when he lead a group of thugs to commit a half-assed robbery of petty merchandise from a dealer.

A jury can hand down a verdict...and it may not be what you like.

My advice?

Don't do the fucking crime.

That being said, if OJ gets parole...great. That is what the law allows. I won't like it...but that's what the law offers somebody who did their time. But like others, I suspect he will be back in prison in a few years.

re: OJ Simpson gets July 20 parole hearing date in Nevada. [UPDATE: PAROLED!]

O.J. should be in jail for the rest of his life, or worse. He murdered two innocent people in cold blood back in 1994, and there was a plethora of physical evidence that proved that he committed the crime. I don't care that he got off in a court of law. He's still guilty, everyone knows he's guilty, and it's one of the biggest jokes & travesties of justice that he got off on this.

The fact that he's in jail for an unrelated crime in 2007 is irrelevant. He should have been in jail since 1994.

I don't give a FLYING FUCK that O.J. had no criminal record before the 2007 incident/crime. ANYONE who thinks he's innocent of those two 1994 murders - despite the overwhelming evidence against him - is a FUCKING MORON!!!!!!. I've followed that case since it happened, and there was an overwhelming amount of blood/DNA & other evidence that proved O.J.'s guilt.

Rich scumbags are ALWAYS getting away with murder. Look at those P.O.S.'s in CO who got away with killing (and/or covering up) their daughter's murder back in 1996.
