Re: Another self-disclosure: I sleep too much

double thumbs up for tom banjo.

youre a classic hypersomnia or narcolepsy case. if you are at Kaiser, they have a fantastic sleep department. with 2 negative sleep studies, there is zero reason why they would not move onto an MSLT.

go to the dr and ask specifically for a referral to a sleep medicine specialist. they should have copies of your sleep studies (if both done at Kaiser--if not get a release of information for the entire sleep study for them)

ask specifically for MSLT. if that is negative, as them specifically what your arousal index was, spontaneous arousals, cyclic alternating pattern, if slow delta/slow wave sleep present... if all that is negative, then your PCP needs to check thyroid, cortisol (with ACTH stim test), and testosterone levels

your sleep habits are not normal.... and it has nothing to do with drinking diet coke and eating like shit (although that doesn't help)

I remember Alan saying that he's had this sleeping problem for like 25 years. So what about work and school? The other day he posted that he slept for 15 hours. WTF? It's obvious that it has to do with all that shit he's storing. I'd be depressed and sleepy all of the time if I had to live in filth and among all that crap.

Re: Another self-disclosure: I sleep too much

So what's in Soda's nowadays? Oh that's right....artificial sweeteners and what's one of the chief complaints about artificial sweeteners?? Chronic Fatigue syndrome.

Years back I changed my lifestyle around completely and will never go back - I was nowhere near as bad as you but I did over indulge. Recently, I started chewing gum.....I would get home from work and either eat a bunch of sugar junk food or just pass out. The reason is because of the Aspartame in the gum - it sucks because I love chewing gum but all the major brands put that artificial shit in their product. I since switched to the artificial free brands you can find online (i.e. glee gum, simply gum, etc...) and while of course they don't taste as good...it gets the job done.

The FDA says all of these artificial sweeteners are safe but yet so many people report issues with them. Companies keep using them because they are very cheap to process their products with but some companies have started giving the option of 100% artificial free products (mainly supplement companies for products like protein powders and stuff).

You are probably going to read this and just keep on moving but if this post does catch your eye....quit the damn soda and caffeine in general. You will turn into a new person.

As always, go get checked out by your doctor as well.

I quit soda, and I have had an easier time that expected with it. I still need some coffee in the morning, though, since I've never been a morning person.

Re: Another self-disclosure: I sleep too much

I quit soda completely 6 years ago and will never go back. I also quit all artificial sweeteners. I only drink water, coffee with stevia, and sometimes almond milk. I also did my best to change my eating habits. In about a year I lost 70lbs and have kept it off within 5lbs since.

I doubt soda is the cause of your sleep problems but I'm sure it does nothing to help. I'd quit soda as soon as you can and drink lots of water. I bet after a couple weeks you'll notice some improvement in how you feel and your energy even if you don't change anything else.

Alan, do you get any sunlight in your apartment?
All the pictures I've seen I haven't seen any sunlight. If you can always turn the light off and it's dark, it's easier to fall asleep. Open a window.

Hey, it sounds like you know your stuff. Do you work in the sleep medicine field, also?

The problem started in high school, when I still lived with my parents and they keep an IMMACULATE house, so 'filth' has little to do with it. It's never been a huge problem at work, mostly because I know I'll be fired if I'm ever caught sleeping on the job. In recent years I've had to take naps during break time, I've even skipped lunch to sleep a few times since I needed that more than food. (As mentioned, after a REALLY good meal I often feel like taking a nap afterwards- and that's commonplace in Italy!) When this problem was new I mostly worked nights anyways at the movie theater, and I'm naturally more awake at night so it wasn't as big a problem as it is now. My first attempts at college back around the same time I often fell asleep in class; when I went back recently I didn't do that again because I KNEW my future depended on it this time, but I did often take naps after class.

Re: Another self-disclosure: I sleep too much

^ That's been my justification for drinking it, since I don't smoke and I don't drink ANY alcohol.

Anyways, just wanted to share that I've finally booked another doctor's appointment next week, after sleeping almost all day yesterday and still feeling tired today. I've had a bunch of stuff to get done (including job searching and cleaning up my place) that hasn't been accomplished since I've slept so much. I'll be bringing up the points discussed in this thread, so thanks to those who contributed. Hopefully I can FINALLY get this taken care of at least by the time I start my upcoming temp job in a week or so. Whatever they tell me to do, I'll f'ing do it.

That ain't happening. He'll rationalize it. Actually, Alan should link the landlord thread and give it to his doctor. I bet you his doctor doesn't know he's a hardcore hoarder.

Re: Another self-disclosure: I sleep too much

Well, just for you I'll mention that. But if I'd been awake the past 2 days I would have moved a couple boxes of crap OUT of here.

The REALLY great news is that I'm starting my new job week after next, and it'll begin at 5 AM. That means I'll probably have to go to sleep nightly at 6PM to get up in time, as it's a bit of a drive to the location. That should be fun. I'd actually prefer working 9 PM and leaving at 5 AM, but it's a job so can't complain too much.
