Problem with alarm system on 1990 Mercedes

I know, it's over 25 years old. My friend bought a used 1990 Mercedes in pretty pristine condition, only 117,000 miles...

But there is a problem with the alarm system. The alarm keeps going off even when you open the driver door with the key. You have to open the passenger door first for the alarm not to go off...

?????

Hooking an Apple IIe to the system has been known to fix it. Do you have one of those laying around?

I'd suggest looking at a Mitchell Manual, finding how to cut off the alarm, and turn it off altogether. If he doesn't want to do it himself, he could take it to a shop. I be he'd be in and out for under $100 or $200.

We have a similar problem with our Hamptons summer home.

So, open the passenger door first. What's the problem?

Re: Problem with alarm system on 1990 Mercedes

If it's an aftermarket alarm there should be a lead from the alarm to the battery. There is usually a fuse that you can pull out along that line. It may also be a faulty actuator/sensor at the door that could be worn out. It's easy to replace. If it's a factory OEM alarm look at the fuse box and pull out the alarm fuse but make sure that fuse isn't connected to other electrical functions.

Try placing a piece of chicken on top of the air filter cover.

Perhaps, next time, maybe don't buy a stolen car. Just saying.

What was his interest rate?

Re: Problem with alarm system on 1990 Mercedes

I had a car with a factory alarm back in the early 90's where the alarm would just go off for no reason while the car was doing 60-70mph down the highway. The headlights would flash the horn would honk, I think people were confused if I was a cop or emergency vehicle as they would get out my way when this happened

I would have to find a place to pull over and pull one of the battery terminals to reset it, then it would be fine until the next time (maybe once every month or two).

I finally got a copy of the OEM wiring diagram and did what others here have said, cut the power wire and did without the alarm.

My personal experience with car alarms is that, instead of making your car less likely to be stolen, they make it more likely to have rocks thrown at it.

Haw haw. Anyone remember the mid-90's when alarms became a thing. For the next five years, you'd get a spike of adrenaline when you hear an alarm go off (someone is trying to break into that car). Then we all became numb to it (oh it's just some idiot's crappy car alarm).

Absolutely. And now when you hear one your only thought is,"who's still driving a car with one of those shitty 90's alarms?"
