A person has visited a state if he or she has set foot on the ground of that state and breathed the air. Having a lay-over at an airport does not count as visiting that state. However, going outside of the airport is acceptable. Some members have arranged for a long lay-over, then rented a car by-the-hour to be able to see more of the city/state. Flying over a state does not count.
There was also a challenge that was somewhat popular many years ago called the "50 by 40 challenge" (visiting all 50 states by your 40th birthday). This likewise did not count airport layovers.

I totally get that neither of these are really an "authority" and that this is kind of a silly thing to have a strong opinion about, but never leaving the airport should just not count. I could easily claim that I have been to Egypt, South Korea and Belgium by virtue of being at their airports but I do not. There is such a huge difference between standing on the banks of the Nile, visiting the pyramids at Giza or even just walking around Cairo for an hour than killing two hours at the Haagen-Dazs in the International terminal at Cairo International (and yes, there is one).

It's also not really apt to compare flying through space to the moon, something that 24 men have done ever (and none since 1972), with landing at an airport, which 82% of American adults have done at least once, about a third do in any given year and that 8+ million people worldwide do every day

I do not count the guys who stayed on the command module as having gone the Moon.

But they have been to space and flown to the moon. This alone should be more than enough to impress a chesty cocktail waitress to go to bed with you. If this is not, ultimately, why they became astronauts to begin with, what is?

visited 20 states (40%)
Create your own visited map of The United States

20 states, plus DC.

I'm told I've also been to New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio when I was a young child, but I don't remember it so I'm not counting it.

I'm counting any place I actually went outside in, so airport only doesn't count in mine (only Texas fits this anyway).

Virginia, Arizona, and Arkansas are sort of cheats. Virginia I was only outside the airport for a few minutes before getting in a cab for DC. Arizona I walked over the bridge at the Hoover Dam and stepped into the state for a few pics before walking back. Arkansas I never actually stepped onto land, but was on a riverboat that crossed into the state for a bit. But I was technically outside breathing Arkansas air and walking around on the boat when it happened, so I'm counting it.

If I only count cities I have slept in, I'd have this:

visited 16 states (32%)

Let me count them out loud: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Maine, Virginia, Texas, Wisconsin, Iowa, Kansas, Colorado, California. + Illinois where I changed planes at the Chicago airport. So = 14.

Added Louisiana to the list a couple weeks ago after a trip south through Memphis and Destin, FL. Came back up through Texas so had to make the drive west. Haven't stayed overnight in all of these states but have visited all of them:

visited 43 states (86%)

Did a 3200 mile drive from MN up through Montana to Alberta/BC in early September...have wanted to see Banff/Jasper National Parks. Was a beautiful drive.

Next up...Minnesota to Key West in February!

Looks like you should modify the route slightly to hit South Carolina on the way down.

Oh I know. I’ve been looking forward to this. I’ll wait until I’m done, but I think I will have visited 8 more states. I’m also bagging a lot of state capitals: I’m in Nashville now, already saw Oklahoma City, and I’m going to hit Jackson, Mississippi and possibly Santa Fe.
