Help needed with Annoying Neighbor - Food smoker edition

Well, I didn't want to have it come to this but I asked (nicely asked) my neighbor numerous times if he could re-position his food smoker because it smells horrid and that's all I constantly smell - He burns wood chips or something in a small metal pot (I don't know anything about food smokers) all day long and that's all I smell - it smells like burning paper - it's horrible.

I have to do something because I'm not going to put up with it but I'm going to do it the legal way - I called the cops on him as well and they said they won't do anything about it (but, I didn't have them over when he was brewing his shit smell so maybe a second call to them (the cops) while he's out there doing it might help??).

Current layout of what we're dealing with: his backyard faces my backyard, my fence is right next to his garden and about 9 feet away there is a shed and in front of that shed is where is smoker is. next to his shed, there is a little stone area where the one side of the garage is.

Ideas I have so far:

- Place my gas weed wacker and high idle right next to my fence where the side of his garage and side of his shed meet - even though I will be about 6-7 feet away - a good amount of sound will travel through that little area - other neighbors won't hear it as much either. If he calls the cops, what I'm doing is perfectly legal (burning the gas out).

- Shop vac (same location as weed wacker).

- industrial blower fan (you can buy them at the home depot) put right against the fence - won't really stop the smell but will look preposterous and piss him off.

Before you tell me to just put a fence a up....that is in the works - but I have some other bills to pay off before doing so.

So, anyone have any ideas for me to try out?

Try starting with the pork butts ... Great with a KC or St. Louis style sauce.

Brisket is always a good choice, in my opinion.

You called the cops because your neighbor was smoking food? And you want to call them out a second time for the same thing? Just wow.

You didn't read my post - why would you comment without reading my post?

How often does he do this, and is the smell coming into your house, or just when you're in your yard?

Sounds awful, but whether it's every couple of weeks vs daily would make a difference in how I felt about it.

My guess is that your neighbor doesn't really know what the hell he's doing. More likely than not, he's running his smoker wrong which is resulting in the "burning paper smell".

If he were properly smoking the meats, you wouldn't be complaining about the smell wafting over. You'd be asking for an invitation to dinner.

Like you suggested...buy a large industrial fan from Home Depot. Buy large quantities of Fart Odor from any novelties store online. Mix it with some veggie oil and water so it doesn't dry. Position in front of large fan. Point large fan at your retard neighbor.

Yell a believable, "Love Yah, Neighbor!" over the fence.

Of course, this assumes your neighbor has a normal nose.

Oh hell yes. If someone was smoking meat next to me all day I would have his babies.

During the summer it's damn near everyday - ALL day long - I get all the wind as well so there is no escaping it.

It sounds like a petty complaint but it's not - it's disgusting and if you out in it even for a minute, you can't get the smell out of your clothes.

I would love if it smelled like BBQ - but it doesn't, furthest thing from it.

If it smells like burnt newspapers, maybe he's not using the smoker correctly. The next time the cops come out, perhaps they could instruct him on its correct use.

Oh and blow the fan into his yard I guess.

You want to blow gas fumes on the food he is smoking? Couldn't that be harmful to eat that food? He might not be using it right, but the cops are probably laughing at you.

Well isn't that what you would be doing with the weed wacker idea? Buy him this book, to give him the hint.

I watch the bbq university show on PBS Steve Raichlen know his stuff when it comes to bbq.

Re: Help needed with Annoying Neighbor - Food smoker edition

In California, there are some strict laws against food smoking - that's why we don't have great BBQ joints here. The way a lot of places in, say, Texas smoke their meats aren't allowed here in CA, so we're a little behind. Some places try to skirt the laws, but it's few and far in between.

Re: Help needed with Annoying Neighbor - Food smoker edition

The police do not have anything to do with this type of situation, which I agree, but what agency might have something to do with it...would be your local fire department. There are city regulations regarding safety of doing outdoor activities, and since we're concerning smoke...the fire department is in more of a position to know whether that smoke is safe and how much inhalation is normal. In a highly crowded suburban area, I would imagine there are more strict rules which should be followed.

You would likely be more successful through your HOA, if you have one.
