Do record players have 'pause'?

I never had a record player.
If you wanted to pause it to make a comment to the audience or answer the phone, could you hit pause, or would you have to stop it from moving?

If the latter, wouldn't it have the silly slow-to-speed up sound until it was spinning at full speed?

Lifting the needle seems inefficient because you would have to keep track of exactly where you lifted it...

How did this technology work?

Some of the better turntables had a lever to raise the needle which would allow you to put it back down at that same spot.

By lifting the needle. That's how the technology worked. Welcome to old school hi-fi.

Re: Do record players have 'pause'?

Other than lifting the needle, there is no pause. Like others have said, most turntables have a lift arm. Unless you talking really old school where you have to return the arm to it's resting position, but most modern turntables have the lift arm.

Re: Do record players have 'pause'?

If you put the needle down on the same point, but the record is rotated say 90, will the audio be in a slightly different spot? Ie not a true pause?

Re: Do record players have 'pause'?

Honestly serious. I've never used one.

I googled it but got a lot of best practices from music aficionados...

Re: Do record players have 'pause'?

Here's a couple of pics of my old school turntables.

The Fisher has a lever to raise the needle.

This early 90's Technics version has a cueing button to raise the needle. A bit more high tech but still won't place the needle exactly where it was.

On most turntables it's virtually impossible to put the needle down on exactly the same point it was lifted from.

Anyway, yeah, as everyone else said, most have a lever that you can use to raise and lower the needle in (roughly) the same spot. It's not an exact science, because the record is spinning, but it's always +/- a few seconds, depending on how much the needle moved, or if the record wasn't pressed 'centered' very well (I have a few where you can see the needle wobble side to side as it spins, and they can sound terrible because of it...)

If you need pause/start functionality with exact accuracy to the millisecond, record players are not going to meet your requirements.

Just don't bring a Crosley or AT-LP60 into that thread.

Why would you want to pause a record? Just listen to it!

The first rule of Book Talk is not to talk about Book Talk.

If you do, people might actually go there and post. Can't have that.

Re: Do record players have 'pause'?

You can power down the turntable while playing, but it's bad for the record and the needle to keep it on the record that way. I still remember how to cue up a record for playing on the radio though- you found the beginning of the song then rotated the turntable backwards enough so that it'd start at the beginning when you started it back up.

Re: Do record players have 'pause'?

I thought that was part of the fun -- guesstimating the groove for the song and dropping the needle.

Re: Do record players have 'pause'?

What i would do is put a spot of white out where the needle was so i could resume from where i left off.
