Check your spare change!

Bank Places 100 'Lucky Pennies' Across US Worth $1,000 Each

Stopping to pick up a stray penny off the ground may not seem worth the effort, yet one bank is trying to change that mindset by placing 100 fake pennies across the country worth $1,000 apiece.

Ally Bank says it is hoping to encourage Americans to look for opportunities to save through its "Lucky Penny" promotion, which launched this week. The lucky pennies carry a copper color like real pennies, but feature the Detroit-based bank's logo instead of Abraham Lincoln's head. The flip side of the coin lists its value at 100,000 cents.

The pennies have been placed in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington, D.C., Miami, Denver, Detroit, San Diego, Charlotte, North Carolina, and Austin, Texas.

The coins can be redeemed online until the end of the year.

I imagine a lot of people who know if this will be sifting through their loose change. I already do for silver quarters but will not be skipping my pennies!

Re: Check your spare change!

I throw my pennies in the trash, so someone could get lucky.

Re: Check your spare change!

That's a stupid plan.

I'll bet they only get one or two redeemed.

100,000 cents? That's like ... A hundred bucks!

(This observation brought to you by the public education system.)

I doubt even bums collect pennies from the trash. Unless the rats at the landfill learn to read, I'm guessing most of those pennies will never be seen again.

Not even that. I think it's like 60 bucks.

Oh yeah, I forgot to account for the exchange rate and Daylight Saving Time ending in a few weeks.

Clues to where the pennies are

A San Diego clue:
This San Diego landmark was built on moving pictures, but not words.

Re: Check your spare change!

So they didn't put them in circulation. Just placed them at a specific location in each city.

Another San Diego clue:
San Diego knows vaudville is dead. Prohibition too. But at this venue, both were once very much alive.

Can't imagine that would be legal.

I'm guessing they're hoping they only have to redeem that many...tons of free advertising for their bank; little cost on the back-end.

It might've been a theater at one point. I was initially thinking Spreckels or the Balboa Theater.
