Just south of downtown Orlando here. Still hoping we don't get hit with the really nasty winds of 75+ mph. The worst parts are supposed to start around 5, although the outer bands have been hitting us all day. Gonna be a worrisome night.

Have you managed to observe the grocery store and/or gas station situation? Friend of mine (now in North Dakota) said the grocery stores were insane.

Re: Matthew: The Serious Hurricane Edition

I'm over in the Bay area 3 miles from the West Coast. Thankfully it won't be that bad here....not much rain and more so just wind. Working 12 hour shifts at the TV station, which of course thinks it's the greatest thing ever. "Gotta have our great ratings!"

Working 12 hours on, 12 off until Saturday.

Hoping everyone evacuates that needs to on the other coast. Stay safe 'talkers!

I'm in Orlando. Eveyrone here is pretty nervous. I'm just pissed they won't pick up my recycle bin tomorrow. Had to put it in the garage.

Here in Davie, about 20 miles west of the beach. It's been eleven years since major hurricane has hit here. Last one was Wilma I believe. Luckily it will not be a direct hit here but it looks like they have it forecasted to circle back around.

Re: Matthew: The Serious Hurricane Edition

I live in Winter Park, Orlando, and today we've had some light rain followed by sunshine. Things have been quiet for a few hours now.

I've lived here for nearly 20 years so I've been through the hurricanes and storms in 2004-2005. Been in this little cinder-block house for years too and it's stood for 50-60 years. I'm hoping that she'll make it through this one too. I hope being so far inland will spare this area major devastation.

I bought groceries and gassed up the car as normal on Sunday so I haven't had to face the lines for bread/water or gas. The local gas stations ran out last night. They've been talking about this storm for a week. It's amazing how many people will wait until the last minute to go get stuff.

Office closed early today and will be closed tomorrow but, provided I am safe and have power/internet, I'm expected to work from home which is fine.

To all those in Florida, stay safe. I hope to see you post soon after this passes!

Re: Matthew: The Serious Hurricane Edition

I read an article that the Waffle House's are going to try and stay open...

My sister is in Fort Myers with her family. Shouldn't be too bad over on the west coast...but they're expecting some rain and such.

Either way...everyone down there stay safe. Hope its not as devastating as its made out to be in the media. Hang in there all!

Re: Matthew: The Serious Hurricane Edition

Waffle Houses always stay open. FEMA actually uses them as an indicator of how an area is dealing with natural disasters.

I stopped and got gas earlier and hit the Publix Supermarket. Both were busy but I didn't see any major problems. People were generally friendly and not panicking. There's a lot of nervous energy though as we don't know how the winds will go tomorrow morning.

Re: Matthew: The Serious Hurricane Edition

Some areas have a curfew all day Friday.

Some heavy rain here in south Orlando but no wind yet.

Wonder how much damage if any the NASA center will have.

I hope SeaWorld and other animal attractions are prepared. I remember during Hurricane Katrina, the New Orleans aquarium had most of the animals die because the generator was in the basement which flooded.

I've been to the Alligator Farm in St. Augustine a few times. There are so many gators there it would be scary to have a surge and have all of them hanging out in your yard. Say hi to Maximo:

What the hell is that thing to the right of Hurrican Matthew? It's been getting bigger since I've been viewing it for the last 5 hours.

Re: Matthew: The Serious Hurricane Edition

So yeah, I'm in Jacksonville, I'm not in an evac zone but people about 2 miles away from me have had a mandatory evacuation in place. Gas is sold out at most gas stations and most gas stations have sealed up their pumps to ensure they don't go flying off. The grocery stores closed at 8 pm tonight, most were well organized with next to zero panic or pandemonium, more of a "Fuck, I guess we need to prepare just in case", Lowes and Home Depot were simply massive long lines.

NOAA updated their charts a few minutes ago and it appears that the hurricane is tracking eastwardly which at least gives us hope that it won't be flattening any cities. Also good is that its projected strength once it gets closer to shore is CAT 3 instead of CAT 4/5. So optimism, but still a scary fucking storm, even for a lifelong Floridian whose been through several hurricanes and tropical storms.

With all that, I've never been happier to have a diesel car. When the lines were wrapping around the block and people were waiting for gas deliveries, I was pulling up, filling up and getting out in 2 minutes tops.

P.S. Fuck Rick Scott and https://www.windytv.com/?26.608,-82.332,6 sure is pretty

The good news is that the eye has "wobbled" towards the east a bit.
