A simple way to buy a little Bitcoin?

Long story short, my license fell out of my pocket a few months ago and since I very rarely drive I haven't bothered to replace it. FF to today and I'm trying to buy $85 in Bitcoin but it appears to be impossible without an ID unless I give someone cash in person and the closest seller is 180 miles away. Am I just really bad at Google today, or is this impossible without paying a hue fee or braving the DMV?

You have no other form of ID? I'm not gonna ask what you need the Bitcoin for.

Nothing with a picture on it. And with all the drug threads lately, I figured this was the place to start looking.

It would be much easier to just buy the bag of Coke off the street. I'm sure most dealers take cash

I did that before posting, the problem with the listings are that there's no one who can meet in person in my area, and I'm not just going to send cash to a stranger. And the ones that will take Paypal, still want an ID.

Re: A simple way to buy a little Bitcoin?

I hear "bitcoin" being talked about all over the place, and I think at one point I either read an article or watched a video that explained what it is...but I still have no idea what it is. I think in my mind I'm just equating it to Monopoly money or something.

So...what the fuck is it?

The short answer: It's a way to launder money, without the Govt. or the IRS being involved, seemingly untraceable. BUT,there's that ID thing that the OP has run into...

Long answer: It's a way to purchase goods and services which are, shall we say, questionable, either morally or legally, or both.

The BTC values fluctuate wildly, it's really like a commodity, and some legal goods like Dell Computers can be purchased with BTC. Some folks have "gotten rich" off of them, having mined them back when you could mine several in a day or week with an average computer... Now, they're selling for over $300 a piece... There are supposedly a finite number of bitcoins, and once all of them have been 'mined', there won't be any more left, but do you really believe that??!!

You might look also up info about the dark web, where Bitcoin is used.

Re: A simple way to buy a little Bitcoin?

Bitcoin was the wave of the future, the medium of currency that was going to take over the world.

Apparently no one noticed that it's total value was small enough for the price to be jacked around by people who do currency manipulation. Or noticed that as an untraceable medium of exchange, it would be really worthwhile for criminal gangs or corrupt insiders to steal millions of dollars from storage sites.

Re: A simple way to buy a little Bitcoin?

I used Circle. They don't advertise it but they do trade in Bitcoin.

You can fund with your bank account or a debit card. I used a virtual card from my bank. It was funded in five minutes and I was able to send it in another five. Simple.

You do pay a premium over market price (like 30%) but it's worth it for just a simple transaction.

Morgan Spurlock's "Inside Man" (CNN) features an episode on bitcoin that was quite informative. Worth a watch.

Re: A simple way to buy a little Bitcoin?

It turns out I need Govt. ID to take the train, so this question is now moot.

I didn't mean I'm a moron for agreeing with you. I meant because I'm not grasping the whole Bitcoin concept. What the hell is "mining"?

So far, I am equating it to Uber. It's a taxi service that claims it isn't a taxi service so it can try to dodge regulations. In this case "Banks are evil, let me be your bank with my made up currency."

I know. I was just exploiting the obvious humor in the way it came out.

Re: A simple way to buy a little Bitcoin?

Probably for security reasons, with the way things are these days. Actually, I'm surprised that anyone could get through their life in this day and age without some sort of government issued photo ID.
