Then pay $65 a month for Amazon+Showtime+HBO, Netflix, Hulu, and SlingTv.
Why in the world would I do THAT? I've been leeching off my parents' Netflix subscription for the past few years but haven't had time to watch anything on it in a while, and my dad keeps saying he's going to cancel it for the same reason. I might as well light money on fire than pay for SlingTV- I did the free trial and felt dumber just having had it for a week. The only streaming service I'm paying for right now is Sugar Instant (all-you-can-watch porn for $8 per month) and I haven't even had time to watch anything on THAT in a while so will probably cancel it this month. I don't have much issue with their service (although obviously the quality doesn't match Blu-Ray) but to get my money's worth I'd have to watch at least one feature every week and right now I'm lucky if I can get in one per month. (And yes, I watch them ALL THE WAY THROUGH, beginning to end.)

Is Hoarding a form of OCD or is it beyond that?
For me there's likely some OCD behind it- even though I'm at work right now, it's comforting to know what I have at home. At least it's not drugs!

And to update the subject here, I checked out a duplex yesterday. I was surprised to see at least 10 other potential renters there also, so if I wanted it there'd be a bit of competition. The living room wasn't shaped well enough to set up my A/V system, so I've decided to pass on it. At this rate I may wait until I can afford a full-size house or at least have more to spend on rent than I do now. (Again there's a lot I could be saying about my current job but that's another subject.)

You pay for porn? You realize this is America, right?

I appreciate QUALITY porn. You can't get that for free.

I've never used SlingTV - why did you feel dumber? Was it the content?

What is your current job and are you expecting a jump in pay in the near future?

0.10% of my monthly take home wouldn't even buy me lunch. At McDonalds.

Sure you can. Anything and everything that is on a paid service or on a DVD is being pirated and uploaded to free streaming sites.

Legally, not really, but easily, absolutely. Without naming any sites because I'm not sure that it's allowed here, it's as easy as youtube. It's basically the same model.

Sometimes. Depends on the quality of the upload and the quality of your connection of course.

Re: Renters- do you really earn 3 times or more your monthly rent?

I've looked at the free porn options out there- the stuff I pay for I can't get in the same quality for free, at least not as easily. I was impressed though that one of the free porn apps on my Roku is one of the only things that can show video on it at the full frame rate (they have a section for videos in 60fps, which I guess is the proper term for hi-def- embarrassed that I don't already know that). And in keeping with the thread subject, wonder if I could rent out my (clean and orderly) living space for porn shoots?

You would do the streaming INSTEAD of buying physical media. You'd still not be watching it, but it wouldn't take up room.

Don't mistake Alan for being in a struggle. One would think he's broke or on unemployment but he's now making money AND has money that his folks give him on occasion. He says "loans" but come on. What GatorDeb says makes sense but why would Alan want to pay less for media? Alan may also say that he shops for media via bargain bins, which is true to an extent, but then he'll wonder why folks don't like to sustain the format by paying full price for BD's.

Alan's issue is not $.

It's that his things provide him comfort beyond what is reasonable.

If he has so much media he's being forced to move, he has too much media, and not only should he not bring more media into the home, he should get rid of a ton of it.

When you have to move because you have too much junk, the junk owns you.

When you are single and/or young you should be living in an apartment or the like and saving up all that money and doing useful things with it. Not just throwing it away to store your stuff.

If you're spending hundreds of extra dollars a month on rent for a place to hold you stuff in, that's money you're not spending traveling to see the Grand Canyon or castles in Scotland or whatever. Or not saving for retirement to do the same. Or not watching what you do watch on a 70" OLED or something.

Purchasing extra space via rent/mortgage should be because you have more people and their clothes and beds and stuff, not because you have too many DVDs.

If you don't want to depend on streaming services having what you want (I sympathize), for like $300 - $400 you can get a cheap mini PC, drop a 5TB drive in it, get an external 5TB for backups of it, and install Plex. And store like 10,000 DVDs. Even 30-50gb BD rips are storable on HDD these days pretty easily. Software to rip stuff really isn't that hard unless you are getting fancy (dual-audio/subs like for anime gets tricky). If this stuff is a bit hard for you, you can post in the PC forum and one of us techies can help you do it. Really not hard to do.

Re: Renters- do you really earn 3 times or more your monthly rent?

I make over 3x my current rent now gross, although I'm pretty sure I didn't have any issues here in Irvine when I made less money and that number was closer to 2.5. Net pay would be a little rougher.

That said, it's kind of funny to hear the complaining about that, let alone about cats. Sure makes sense to me from a landlord or property owner perspective. Alas, such is Alan.

Alan doesn't strike me a being a fan of movies, just a fan of the media.

Except if you live there, you won't be able to afford any laserdiscs or much of anything else since all your money will be going towards rent! Seems useless having Amoeba in your back yard if you don't have any money to spend there.
