Would you want to know the day you are going to die?

Would you want to know the day that you are going to die, assuming the date you would be given is correct and could not be changed in any way?

Funny, I had thought about creating this very poll a number of times on here over the years. I suppose it would be beneficial if you wanted to leave a lot of money to loved ones, you could just purchase a huge amount of life insurance a short period of time before the date.

What if you did things like jump out of an airplane without the aid of a parachute, or fired a loaded gun at your head. You could possibly do a lot of daredevil stunts knowing you weren't going to die on that day, but I suppose you could become crippled by doing so.

I would say yes, it would eliminate the worry about doing just about anything. You know you are not going to die in a traffic accident, or a plane crash. You can bungie jump or skydive with out worry.

There would be an awful lot of Batmen patrolling the city streets...

And I say yes. It would make planning a whole lot easier.

I'd rather it come as a surprise. But I went through a long stretch when I decided every day that I wasn't going to die that day.

Wasn't there a Twilight Zone episode (or similar type of show) about this? A guy doing crazy shit because he somehow knew the date of his death was 30 years off, so he could do whatever he wanted? Then he broke his neck and became a quadriplegic or something. I swear I've seen/read that somewhere.

^I don't remember that one, but there was the guy that could live as long as he wanted, and got himself 'life' in prison.

Re: Would you want to know the day you are going to die?

Absolutely. I could properly plan things, how to dispose most thoroughly and appropriately of my assets, and what to do in the time allotted me. It would be a huge, huge thing to know if I had to plan only for age 60 vs 80 vs 100. Of course, just knowing the date would tell you nothing about inflation, the state of the world at the time, etc, so it's a very loaded question.

But, the very question is quite a pandora's box. Everybody would have an equally different yet valid answer to it. What a way to break the ice...

No, because with my luck it would be on the world's tallest waterslide.

Rob banks, bang hookers, stalk movie stars. On the other hand it would suck and be depressing for everyone around you.

Venus on the Half Shell, by Philip Jose Farmer, writing as Kilgore Trout.

The immortal character was sentenced to life in prison on some planet. After 120 years, he filed a suit arguing that he should be released because he had spent more time in prison than the oldest person ever had lived.

The court said no.

You don't have to know your fresh date to do all that. In your line of work, you get to meet guys who are already doing that all the time.

Re: Would you want to know the day you are going to die?

Yes, I would, because I could tell people I was going to die one day later than I knew I would, and fuck up their minds.

Or tell them one day before. Then when you don't die they all think you're a liar until the next day when you die then they feel all guilty about doubting you.

Re: Would you want to know the day you are going to die?

The problem I have with the question, even as stated, is that I would probably not believe the answer.

If someone told me I was absolutely, positively going to die on THAT day, I would be likely to devote an awful of time and energy to proving them wrong.

One way or the other...

Re: Would you want to know the day you are going to die?

If the date was far enough out, I'd probably be cool with knowing. As the date drew nearer, I have no doubt it would fill me with sadness, dread, and about a billion other emotions I wouldn't want to deal with.

No chance for me. I'm already paranoid about it anyways with the unknown of what happens afterwards. I think it would drive me crazy and just make me dread the day it was coming.

Assume nothing happens afterwards and you won't have to be paranoid about it.

I know it's an irrational fear because it is what it is and it happens to everyone eventually but I think it's also a fairly natural one. It's the one question that can't be answered until it happens. Personally I do believe that something does come afterwards but obviously that's not a for sure.
