Best "Keynote" type speakers you've seen?

Since I am in a business where I get to see, and have had to hire keynote speakers...who are some of the best that you've seen?

Just saw Peyton Manning a week ago (he was ok)...but I hired the founder of because I said I would earlier this year and he was unbelievably great. (Alex Sheen)...Others that I've hired were Archie Manning, Frank Abagnale (Great), Jeffrey Ma (Part of the MIT Blackjack team), Jerry Rice & Chris Gardner (the Pursuit of Happiness guy)...

Others I've seen lately were Buzz Aldrin (totally a hero of mine, but not the best speaker, getting up there in age), Thomas Dolby (surprisingly good) and probably more that have escaped my brain.

Here is one of Alex's Ted Talks...

I think the right term is "public speakers".

I have attended a number of conferences and seminars for work and have seen a number of spectacular speakers on subjects that would have otherwise been dull as mud. Not impressed with the video posted.

Well, check out his other videos. He had the entire room captivated (500+ people) and had the audience laughing in one second and crying the next. A millennial that quit his 6 figure job to start his charity. Been on many national tv shows, 3x Ted Talk speaker. Seriously, one of the best I've ever seen. But to each his own...

Life. His spoken word piece about his best friend getting murdered is one of the most moving things I've ever heard.

Condoleezza Rice and Antwone Fisher were both pretty good. Those are the two that stand out.

I would enjoy seeing milo yinapolus speak but I don't know if he does any speaking engagements other than at college campuses.

Back when I was a Pediatric Resident in the mid-90s, I went to the Keynote address at the AAP Conference which was given by Fred Rodgers. I snuck in my then-girlfriend, now-wife who was a huge Mr Rogers fan. That was a surprisingly touching and affecting speech that I've never forgotten.
Years later I went to another AAP conference in D.C. and the Keynote speaker was Michelle Obama. That was the day she launched her Healthy Kids initiative which has turned into an impressive program. Thought she was very poised and knowledgeable. But she was no Mr Rodgers.

That's excellent. We're a pretty simple species and advertisers know our typical behaviors and instincts well.

This is a 4 hour documentary on Edward Bernays, nephew of Sigmund Freud, and how he invented the public relations industry as well as shaped our modern society with commercials. It is absolutely excellent. Saw this a few years ago.

At least watch from 6:00 to 8:30. The Germans made "propaganda" a bad word so they changed it to Council on Public Relations.

^ I believe something changed on DVDtalk in the last few days---I think you can now paste the "embed" code from Youtube and it works again, but if you do the [yt] thing, it doesn't work anymore.

Re: Best "Keynote" type speakers you've seen?

I've been fortunate to hear some pretty good speakers, alongside a few duds, in the past few years through my job, I've seen:
  • Tony Hsieh talk about the Zappos workplace environment and his desire to help small businesses on the outskirts of Las Vegas.
  • Steve Wozniak, who droned on and on, boring many in the audience. A lot of people left while he was speaking.
  • Former Disney executive Lee Cockerell talk about customer service and leadership. He was very good.
  • Shaquille O'Neal once spoke at a convention where I assumed he would talk about teamwork and leadership but instead chatted with the moderator about basketball stats for nearly an hour. Not fun for those who don't follow basketball.
  • Drew Dudley, whom I had never heard of, was an exceptional speaker hired by my company to improve employee engagement.

Re: Best "Keynote" type speakers you've seen?

^^ forgot about Woz. Just saw him in June. He was a bit ADD but they did a sit down talk with him that kept him more in control. Some what. I asked him he first question of the Q&A about music he likes, mumbled about Americana (said I wouldn't know any of the artists) and when I took a pic with him I mentioned Dave Alvin and he lit up. Lol

I saw David Byrne speak a few years ago at the opening of an arts & entertainment center. That was pretty cool.
