Tips for a weekend trip to Sydney

Hi everybody! My gf and I are planning a trip to Sydney for a weekend. We're both in our mid 20's and lucked out on an opportunity to go to Australia next month (arrive Sat evening, leave Monday noonish), but neither of us have been before and have no idea what to do. Googling shows a bunch of stuff but I wanted to get the real perspective and tips, straight from the otter's mouth! :>

A whole weekend?! Hopefully you don't run out things to do.

Re: Tips for a weekend trip to Sydney

One of the reasons I never take Australia seriously as a holiday spot, is that I would be afraid I'd seriously run out of things I'd enjoy doing after 2 days.

No one has ever been able to convince me otherwise.

Not even 2 days. More like 1 day. Arrives Saturday night. Figure leaving noon on Monday means that day is just going to the airport.

As to what to see in 1 day. I guess the famous Opera house.

The Taronga zoo is pretty awesome. I recommend it. Did a harbor cruise and enjoyed it. Bondi beach is a cool touristy beach if you want to check that out. I didn't have a bunch of time there, so I didn't get to do a ton of stuff.

Re: Tips for a weekend trip to Sydney

Seriously? A minimum >16hr flight, each way, assuming it's a direct flight. For 1 day?

Why even bother? I'd love to visit Australia, but under those circumstances, hell no.

Also, it's their winter. Sydney has an average high of 64F in August.

Re: Tips for a weekend trip to Sydney

Skip the zoo. It's awesome, but with your short timeline, skip it. A zoo is a zoo.

The Opera House is pretty nice.

I say book a time to climb the Sydney Harbor Bridge. It's a guided tour, and it'll take about 2 hours (maybe more? I'm not sure), but the view is fantastic. Of course... in August... all bets are off. Could end up being a super cloudy day.

Oh, and bring back a case of V. Silver or green cans, please. It's my favourite energy drink, and you can't get it in North America without paying a ridiculous price.

But seriously... arriving late Saturday and leaving Monday? That's... short. Getting back to the Sydney airport can be a pain in the ass (take the metro if you can... a cab will take longer and cost you a hell of a lot more).

There's more to do on the moon right now than all of australia.

I wouldn't be getting bored with the moon after 1 day.

Re: Tips for a weekend trip to Sydney

while i admit zoos are zoos, Taronga Zoo is pretty cool in that it is across the harbor. It is a bit elevated so you have some fantastic views across the harbor while you are checking out the wildlife.

Re: Tips for a weekend trip to Sydney

You need at least 5 days to fully enjoy Sydney.

That would be a waste IMO to just go there for a weekend (1 full day?)

Probably hanging out at the Sydney Harbor and do the Bridge Climb. Although that's a very touristy attraction there.

Re: Tips for a weekend trip to Sydney

Certainly check out the Circular Quay area - hopefully your hotel is close by. It's a nice place to walk around. The Opera house is a must. You can take a guided tour - folks I spoke to said it was good. There's a hop-on hop-off cruise boat you can get right there at the Quay that will take you all around - including the zoo. You can combine that with the hop-on hop-off bus to get you over to Bondi Beach.

With such little time that all might be the best way to see as much as you can while you are there.

You're in the U.S., right OP? If so, a weekend in Sydney is a terrible idea. Make it a week or more.

Don't listen to all these "It's not enough time" people. That is the time you have there.

Opera House, Bridge, Ferry to Manly Beach...I found it just like Southern California (where I live)...

How does spending longer on a flight than at a destination make sense? is not a cruise. Unless you are traveling from the other side of Australia.

Arrive at airport, depart plane, exit terminal, go outside and turn around and go home. Should be enough time.

Yeah, it's not efficient. Never mind the fucking jet lag you will most certainly be suffering from in the span of just 2 days. You're in for a world of hurt.

I'm sure if they would stay longer the could. So.. the ask is, for the limited time they have, what can they do? They aren't asking for opinions of how long they should stay.

WSB does bring up a point about jetlag though but if you get there Sat evening and bunk in - you should be OK for Sunday sightseeing.

How do you figure what you described takes 5 days?

Hanging out at a harbor and doing a bridge climb? That could take what? 5 hours at the most?

Then what?

What else would I find interesting to do for the next 4 1/2 days considering it takes 16 hours just to get there?

I'm sure I'm coming off as an ass, but I'm constantly having friends and co-workers that have never even left the US tell me I should visit australia and I just don't see the point.

I was talking about if the OP is only doing a weekend as he said with probably only 1 full day to be a tourist. The Bridge Climb would be one of the things I would do with only 1 day.

Wasn't talking about 5 days.

For the record, I've been to Sydney and Melbourne before. I spent 10 days there and had a great time. But yes, it took roughly 32 hours of flying to get there back and forth for me from LAX.

Here's the top things to do/attractions in Sydney according to Trip Advisor. The Harbour Bridge as I mentioned is #4. I did most of the top 20 when I was there.

Re: Tips for a weekend trip to Sydney

Having traveled all over the world, I didn't think Sydney was all that. Just like I said, similar to So Cal (lots of beautiful people) and nice beaches. But I would rather have 36 hours somewhere (Even figuring in 36 hours of travel time) than ZERO travel time, and ZERO time somewhere else.
