One day I'd just take the hop on hop off bus tour. It goes by all the famous sites and you can walk around the area and get back on. I recommend Tower of London and a sunset boat cruise on the Thames.

Thanks, I'll look into that. Is there a particular company or name these tours go by?

Hop on Hop off. Don't worry. There's double decker tours every other block in London. You can't miss them.

Cutting and pasting my comments from that thread:

The Churchill War Rooms. Amazingly preserved Churchill bunker a block away from 10 Downing St. This was a real find when we went.
Trafalgar Square - The monument to Lord Nelson is amazing.
Natural History Museum
Science Museum
Tower of London
Tower Bridge
+ Buckingham Palace
+ Westminster Abbey

Hard to do all of these things in one day though.

Thanks for this tip. I'm going next month and this is not too far from our hotel. Maybe sneak away from the wife and kid some afternoon and visit alone. Wives aren't into WWII history.

Good stuff in there but that oyster card stuff is confusing.

I'll be traveling with a co worker but he's going with me to Sheffield and then leaving and I'll head back to London on my own. I'm far more interested in seeing Stonehenge and castles are the exclusive tours worth it?

Hard to do all of these things in one day though.

I found the Churchill War Rooms to be a bit boring.
Tower of London is must as is the Tower Bridge.

Let me put it this way: I'm going back again in September with a friend for the first 2 nights in London (then taking a trip around the UK, then back to London for 1 night before going to Paris), and it's going to be:

Tower of London
Tower Bridge - show her where a lorry driver shot me in the face with a penny gun while I was cycling 2 blocks down from the Tower Bridge.
Seeing the Ricky Gervais - David Brent movie (which opens 19 August)
Seeing my favourite comedian - Richard Herring
Clothes shopping at the Superdry store.
Eating at one of Gordan Ramsays restaurants - not sure which one yet.

I'm sure we're going to do more, but nothing is set in stone. We'll see where our feet take us.

But seriously, if you only have one day/night in London don't try to do too much. Walk around the Thames - do the loop around the river from Tower Bridge, St. Pauls, Parliament/Big Ben around to the Millenium Wheel thing and call it good.

I haven't done the exclusives, and I haven't been to Stonehenge in a few years. They have since removed a road that ran adjacent, and put in the new visitors centre, but I'll be checking that out on the way to Cardiff in September.

One thing to note about getting to Stonehenge is if you're taking the trains around, the nearest train station is Salisbury. From there you have to take a tour bus to stonehenge which costs roughly $20 (may be a bit less now that the pound is more in our favour).

What castles were you thinking about? I've been to a few and may have some insight. I would suggest a trip to Bath, it's about another hour by train from Salisbury.
The Roman Baths were well worth a visit.

Well, you said you only have one day. Stonehenge will take up most of the day since it's pretty far away. If I were you I would just take the tube and go around the city. It circles the whole city and you will never get lost since it eventually goes back to where you started. The London Eye alone will take an hour if you decide to do that depending on the line. The ride itself is a little over half an hour.

Skip Stonehenge. There's plenty to see in London and travel over there isn't like it is here. Brits act like you need to pack fucking blankets and a food supply in the car to drive fifteen miles.

When I was in London in 1999 I stayed at the Heathrow Marriott, out by the airport. It was brand new then. If I were going to be there several days I wouldn't stay that far out of the city.

Have lived off and on in London since 2009.

If you want a cheap and cheerful place to stay, centrally located, Travelodge in Covent Garden is your best bet.

I've stayed there several times and have never had any problems.

If you want discounted tickets to West End shows, use the official TKTS booth on the south side of Leicester Square...

Of the times I have stayed in London, staying near Covent Garden was my favorite location for sight-seeing and general convenience.

Even with two little people dancing around it, it's still underwhelming.
