Show of hands, please, PCH Sweepstakes

Did you get a letter that starts with, "Not everyone gets this letter"?

The cynic in me says, the people who didn't get it are the ones who dropped off their mailing list because they died.

I meticulously go through it each year and spending several hours filling it out.

Only to have my heart broken.

Naw I toss it as soon as I get it. Even though they tell me I MAY have already won!!!

When I was a little kid, I used to love those stamps they would give you. You know, the ones you were supposed to use to tell them which magazines you wanted? I would use them as stamps and pretend to mail letters.

But yeah, I haven't given more than 30 seconds thought to PCH since I was 8 years old. I should probably enter, since it's free, but I never bother.

I don't think I've seen a PCH mailing in over twenty years.

My mother used to get then when I was a kid, but I don't think I've ecer received one. Wasn't even aware it was still around.

I think the last time I got one with was with an offer to sign up for the Columbia House Record Club. Did you get a mailing from the Marilyn Monroe fan club as well?

I think PCH targets the AARP set these days. My father still gets PCH mail on a semi-regular basis.

I wonder if people under 30 even know what Publisher's Clearinghouse does.

We don't get stuff from them snail mail but we do play the games online. Only thing I've won from all the time I've spent there is a $5 Amazon GC.

We need to win that fucking thing damnit, I want to retire!

Not sure, but in the words of a Bernie Sanders supporter who yelled in my ear once..."FREE STUFF!!!!"

In any case, I might enter the latest sweepstakes. I don't even know if people have a "real" chance as I've heard stories over the years of piles of entries being trashed by employees who just didn't want to open them. So, while you can enter online, who knows if your chance is a little better.

I can't remember if it was Columbia House or BMG, but I *loved* when they'd send the little stamps of album covers instead of the boring old catalogue. I used to put the "cool ones" on my locker or on book covers... and the "bad ones" (Peter Cetera, Air Supply) on friend's lockers and books: "Check it out you guys.... Mike likes Air Supply! HARHARHAR!!" So stupid, but fun times!

I think PCH took a big hit when Ed McMahon died.

Several years ago my wife ordered a handful of crap from them (and I mean CRAP) I threw most of it directly into the trash as soon as I took it out of the box.

When I saw PCH I thought of the Pacific Coast Highway.

I'm over 50, so I know.

Back when books were printed on paper, publishers would print the number of books that they expected to sell. If the book was a dud, they would be stuck with a bunch of unsold copies. Publisher's Clearinghouse would buy unsold stock from several publishers and sell those books through a mail order catalogue for half or a quarter of list price.

When I was thirteen and fourteen, I read a lot. I would browse that catalogue looking for good books at low prices. But out of hundreds of titles, there wouldn't be one single book that interested me.

Re: Show of hands, please, PCH Sweepstakes

Did PCH have a better reputation 30 years ago? I remember it was a bigger deal in the 90s at least. But today it seems like on the same level as Life Alert and those daytime Judge Judy ads. Just seems like Ed McMahon would have been "above" it (aside from the paycheck).

It does nearly a billion in revenue each year.

I always thought of its pop culture heyday as the 1980s. You couldn't avoid the PCH commercials on television back in the day.

Haven't received anything in years from PCH...then again I don't subscribe to any magazines and haven't in 20+ years.

Anything I did receive from them would go right in the trash.

Where's the poll choice for, "I didn't enter, nor get the letter"?

Re: Show of hands, please, PCH Sweepstakes

It just so happens I got a letter from them a few days ago (and yesterday I turned 51, so I guess I'm in that "AARP Set" ... ).

The letter said something about responding so I'd be in the "authorized group" to win something. I threw it in the recycle bin.
