Car insurance - how to file a claim question

My mom had an accident and her car has damage. She has insurance. I'll probably be the one handling it since she is in the hospital. What steps do I need to do. Just call up the insurance company with her policy # and the accident report? Can I do it or does it have to be called in by her?

The car was towed from the site. Do I move it from that location (if it can be driven) or talk to the insurance first?

Thanks

If she can't do it then you should do it.

If you have her policy number and the accident report, you should be able to call and handle it while she's in the hospital. Speak to the insurance company before moving the car.

Re: Car insurance - how to file a claim question

Your insurance company should do the leg work for you if they are good. I think they will understand she is in the hospital and you are doing things on her behalf. Besides, the police report should be enough at this point. The adjuster will follow up on that and will come by to speak to your mom.

Was it your mom's fault or another driver? If there was another driver and it was clearly his/her fault your insurance will go after them to cover whatever costs your mom incurs.

I hope your mom gets better. That's what is most important here.

Thanks!. I looked up the local office and can stop by there tomorrow. Never had to deal with a car accident & insurance before.

Just call the insurance company Can't people do simple, common sense tasks anymore without asking advice on the internet?!?!

C'mon now. What's wrong with asking about something you've never done before? Common sense is asking if you don't know.

He's never done it and his mom is in the hospital. He's probably freaking out a bit. Cut him some slack here.

resinrats - hope your mom is okay and recovering nicely.

Call the insurance company, and let them know the details that you have. Unless you are listed on the policy or have a POA, you will be unable to make any decisions on what to do with the vehicle repair wise. But at least this way you will get the process started.

I must admit, this was my first thought (without the implied exasperation or eye rolling). It seems pretty straightforward to me. I would call the insurance company, explain the basics, and ask them how to proceed.

I also completely agree with this, no harm done by asking, and I can appreciate being shaken up by the experience, concerned for your mom, and coming to this bastion of knowledge and kindness for answers. I hope things turn out well and that your mom recovers quickly!

Considering how often urination and anuses are involved in the answers here, this place would likely not be my first choice for questions regarding my mother.

This, so much this.

And asking for help when you need it is never the wrong thing to do.

Good luck to you both.
