Kitten Rescue Story

So last night at around 10:30 I hear a loud meowing coming from outside my house. I go outside and there are two women with flashlights looking at the wall of my neighbors house. I live in a housing development so the next house is maybe 12 feet from mine. I look up and there is a very small kitten which had climbed up the stucco wall of the two story house and is holding on at the very top about 30 feet up. They tell me they just knocked on the neighbors door to tell them and the guy said "Who cares" and shut the door. They had also called the fire department and they were coming with a ladder. I stand right under where the kitten is so if it falls I can try to catch it.

About 5 minutes later the fire department shows up and they start getting their ladder ready. I back up to get out of their way and of course right at that time the kitten falls. The yards are gravel, decorative rocks and bushes so I can't get over the bush quick enough to catch it and it lands right on the rocks. It is flopping around and I'm thinking the worst so I pick it up and hold it tight and finally it stops twitching but it's not moving and barely breathing. The fireman that was closest to me says "Ok, we're leaving now" and they take off.

Me and my wife take it to the emergency vet and the whole time shes driving I'm holding it and it's breathing, occasionally crying, but barely moving. We get there and the vet takes it and checks it out and says it doesn't look like anything is broken. She puts it on the table and the kitten starts walking and she says kittens are incredibly resilient and that it seems to be fine. So we take it home and since we already have 4 cats we have plenty of food so we feed it some wet food and it eats like it's never eaten before. We put it in a cat carrier in between us on the bed so we could watch it and the whole night if I didn't keep my hand in the carrier on her she would start crying so I got about 30 minutes total of sleep before having to get up for work.

She seems to be doing great today and I'm not sure what we're going to do with her but I'm already getting attached. Here she is:

Lucky cat! Wonder where she came from? Your neighbor is certainly a jerk.

We have quite a few strays that I see in our neighborhood but I've never seen a kitten. I usually leave dry food out outside our house for if they get hungry. It's pretty young so I'm assuming it was from one of the strays.

Me and my wife are animal people (we have 11 pets) so it was not even a question that we were going to try and help it. Still thanks for the compliment!

What a cute kitty. It's good you found her before she went feral.

Re: Kitten Rescue Story

Where the heck do you live that the fire department comes out over a cat stuck up high?

I remember a huge ad campaign when I was younger, instructing people not to waste the fire department's time calling about cats on the roof or in a tree. The fire department said cats will get down on their own, when was the last time you saw a cat skeleton sitting in a tree? They have limited resources and people to worry about.

The cat looks nice, I hope you'll give her a good home. I found my cat as a stray in the midst of a Saskatchewan snowstorm back in 2000. I took mercy on her and brought her into my apartment, thinking I'd give her to the pound in the morning, but I grew attached and 16 years and two provinces later later I still have her.

Re: Kitten Rescue Story

Cute kitty The Questyen!

Crocker! So that's where my cat got off to...

Seriously, that's exactly the type/color of cat I've been looking for. I've had 2 grey female kitties with green eyes in my lifetime, my grandparents also had 2, they are the most beautiful cats and also the most popular when it comes to rescues/adoptions. The last one I saw (a kitten) lasted a whole 2 days before she was adopted (I wasn't quick enough), she was a cute kitty! We have a rescue dog who gets along well with other critters (for the most part), she likes to bark but no bite. I'd really like to find out if what the rescue people said about her being good with cats is true. We'd definitely want to watch her carefully until we were certain. I think the dog would adopt the cat as if she was her own...

I didn't call the fire department so I'm not sure what the protocol is here. The issue in this situation was that it wasn't in a tree or on a roof it was 30 feet up on stucco and it couldn't have gotten to the roof. So it's options for getting down were someone going up and getting it or it falling 30 feet down.

As Otterville's resident middle-aged crazy cat lady, I hereby confer upon you the rank of Mensch, first class.

P.S. She's adorable. Give her cuddles from her Auntie Vibs, please.

Re: Kitten Rescue Story

Glad to hear that you literally rescued the cat. I'm so tired of these people who go to the dog pound and "rescue" a pet. You adopted an animal from the pound asshole, you didn't smuggle it out of East Berlin.

Glad you rescued the kitten, but I have to agree ... I am amazed the fire department even responded.

Gilbert, AZ actually. We're ranked #2 safest city in the United States for cities with a population of more than 200,000 people.

I'm not a very social person and I don't go outside of my house unless I'm going to my car so I've had zero interactions with 99% of my neighbors even though we've lived here for 7 years now. I don't even think I've seen the person who lives in that house.
