Hawaii Big Island vacation

We are going in the middle of October for 7 days. Wife and two daughters 10 and 17.

We have been to Kauai twice and loved it.

Looking for tips, ideas, etc.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Obviously.

My favorite beach is Makalawena just north of Kona. It's pretty secluded. You have to hike/walk 20-30 minutes over a lava rock field to get to it.

The waterfalls and black sand beaches on the East side of the Island are worth the trip. And yes, don't miss Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Even if the volcanoes aren't visually active.

Re: Hawaii Big Island vacation

Maybe I'm in the minority but we spent 4 days on the Kona coast and frankly found it beautiful but expensive and boring. Other than the volcano helicopter ride over the volcano, I don't remember much to do there.

Take a ride up to the observatories on Mauna Kea. The climate transition is something I always wanted to experience.

Uncle Billy's hotel in Kailua-Kona is not much more than most mainland hotels. The others are very expensive. Eating at the hotel and fast food places are actually cheaper than the grocery store.

Re: Hawaii Big Island vacation

Thanks for the hotel recommendation.

We always stay at hotels, but being the XXI century, should we try something else?
A house or something like that from one of those apps.

Re: Hawaii Big Island vacation

We were there last year and rented a house for 10 days on the East cost south of Hilo. Had a great time.

Drove over to Kailua-Kona (touristy) and also visited the Tiki statues and such at Pu'uhonua.

We also drove down to the southern most US point, which was kinda surreal (tall open cliffs).

Did some snorkeling at various places including the Punaluu black sand beach which was pretty cool. There is also a green sand beach, but it's a bit of a trek to get to.

There is an observatory up on Mauna Kea, but it was closed when we were there.

The volcano is interesting. Pretty much a big hole in ground, and you really only get a feel for it at night. In the day all you could really see was steam. There are a few decent walks/hikes around there.

Oh, and it rains.

Re: Hawaii Big Island vacation

We were just there in December. It is a cool island, the Kona side and the Hilo side are 100% different. It is worth a day trip over to Hilo, there are some interesting stores, nice places to eat, and there are many waterfalls over there worth seeing. I'll go through what we did and put in some specific places tomorrow, but it is fun. We had been to Oahu and Kauai before, it is vastly different from those.

We did an airbnb which works out nice ... just having a kitchen for snacks and breakfast makes it worthwhile to me.

Ken`s Pancake House in Hilo is excellent. Also, if you're adventurous and not afraid of off roading with a 4wd jeep, the green sand beach at the southern tip of Hawaii is awesome.

Re: Hawaii Big Island vacation

I've always wanted to visit the "Big Island" myself, to stay as a destination. Have been to Oahu and Maui, and they were already getting crowded by the '80s, Maui less so. Hawaii back then was like rural farmland, so I didn't even visit the island. Now, I suppose that it is getting crowded and 'spoilt' by human sprawl, but I hope I'm wrong. Is the Big Island the last great bastion of unspoiled land left in the Hawaii islands, or has it been taken over by tourists and hotels now, like the other islands?

Re: Hawaii Big Island vacation

Kauai - Outdoor/adventure paradise
Oahu - Big city life, just on a tropical island
Maui - A little something for everyone
Big Island - Larger scale Kauai, and a little more variety

There are some towns on the Big Island, but it is not urban sprawl by any means. There are more modern town areas like Kailua Kona where you can find subdivisions and strip malls, but most of the Island is quiet and not crowded. Hilo is much more quaint and quiet vs the dry side of the island. We really enjoyed our time on the Big Island and I would do it again.

Re: Hawaii Big Island vacation

Hawaii last I checked has some very strict COVID protocols. Research carefully before you book your ticket and plan ahead. I know some people got screwed late last year traveling there and not following the protocols. One guy had to quarantine for 14 days because his test was processed late. The other was a couple celebrating their anniversary and they took the wrong COVID test and were forced to fly back losing their money on hotel and such.

Yeah.. I'm reluctantly going to wait until 2022 or 23 to do *any* long trips. Just don't want to get fucked over or screwed by COVID protocol / masks / quarantine, rendering the trip a toilsome chore instread of all fun like it's meant to be.

On the news the last few days have been stories about the high cost of renting cars in Hawaii.

$1,000 a day to rent a car? Low supply, surging demand are pushing up prices in Hawaii

I remember it was like $200-$300 per day when we were there a couple of summers ago. Doesn't surprise me as I expect Hawaii to be a destination for eager US travelers who can't go overseas because of Covid.

I can't imagine there are any circumstances anywhere in life that you would be having fun.

Re: Hawaii Big Island vacation

I don't get how there could be a shortage in rental cars if the number of tourists is not at normal peak levels? Did they remove a bunch of cars from the island when Covid hit?
