I've lost 60 - 80 pounds in the last 6 months

And I'm not entirely sure how. A big part of it has been the fact that I've gone from drinking almost every night to drinking maybe once a week and I've switched from beer to liquor. Normally all this would be cause for celebration, but the reason I've cut way back on drinking and the other cause for my weight loss, my depression and anxiety, have gotten worse. Last fall, the psych doc I'd been with for a couple years left the clinic and since I've seen 3 different doctors and they keep fucking my meds around. They took me off of benzos completely and replaced it with gabbapentin which doesn't help my anxiety at all so I rarely leave my apartment anymore, thus the not drinking. It's also not unusual now for me to literally sleep 2 days straight and I have 0 appetite so I'm barely eating. Even on the days where I'm awake for 16 hours or more I eat once, maybe twice. None of my doctors seem to think this is an issue, my GP didn't even mention the weight loss when I was in for a check up last month.
The state of mental healthcare around here is horrible so it's not like I can just go somewhere else, each clinic has a 3 month wait just to get in to see someone. I've gone from the heaviest I've ever been (350) last summer,to 271 today. I've gotten a lot of positive comments, but now 75 percent of my shorts and pants don't fit anymore. I just don't know what to do with myself, I guess if I can't get healthy mentally, I can at least work on getting better physically.

That's awful. Have you spelled out to the doctors that your anxiety is worse, you don't leave your apartment, that you sleep for two days straight, and you have no appetite?

Getting off beer is good. Replacing it with lots of hard liquor is bad. I had a neighbor whose pain-management program was to drink a handle of vodka every few days. He died.

You should get on a waiting list at another clinic. Even waiting three months for help is better than not getting any help at all.

Re: I've lost 60 - 80 pounds in the last 6 months

Nick, I have had neighbors who didn't drink vodka and they died too.

Sounds like the current state of mental health care in Wisconsin needs to be corrected with more gun laws.

Seriously though, the weight loss is a great thing but not under the conditions it is happening. I agree with Nick, if the current place isn't helping out you need to switch. Even if you need to travel a ways to see a new doctor, you definitely need to find one that is working for you. Any chance you could follow the doctor who left?

Gabapentin is a worthless drug, in my unprofessional opinion. I've never taken it, but from those who have, it does not help their issues, and just creates new ones with other drugs. It could be due to the body adapting to the infiltrating chemical, which is common. Problem is, some docs prescribe something different, and the cycle continues.

Do try to eat. Have an egg in the morning and a salad at night or something.

unexplained weight loss + worsening anxiety sounds like HYPERthyroidism perhaps. Demand that someone check your TSH.

Have you tried weed? If not, consider it. I know several alcoholics that went to weed and that has replaced medication for several as well.

Come to think of it, should a guy named NORML even need to be reminded of weed?

Benzos always killed my appetite, maybe the Gabapentin is doing the same for you?

@ Dave. Yeah, I've tried weed once or twice.

Re: my thyroid, I'm already on a thyroid med called levothyroxine for hypothyroidism and get my tsh tested every 6 months. Is it possible the meds kicked my thyroid into hyperdrive and induced hyperthyroidism?

well, the thyroid can change at the drop of a hat, rather quickly, and if you are taking too much synthroid you can push yourself into a medically induced hyperthyroid-like state. It's also a medication that is meant to be taken on an empty stomach, so if you've somehow switched the timing of when you've been taking it, your body may be absorbing more of the medication than it was before. Anyhoo, if it has been awhile, I'd just ask to have that TSH rechecked.

Re: I've lost 60 - 80 pounds in the last 6 months

According to the shitty bathroom scale I'm using, I'm down another 30 pounds. I did hae the flu and literally slept 3 and a half days away and went without eating except for a bowl of sherbet and 2 popsicles, but that's not an explanation for 30 pounds so I made an appointment with my doctor for tomorrow. I suspect this will lead to a boatload of tests, and hopefully some kind of explanation. My problem now is, I have nothing to wear. I've got a ton of old shirts that fit again but all my shorts fall down.

I suggest buying a belt, suspenders, or new shorts.

Suspenders are badass. Think Gordon Gekko. Or the Wolf of Wall Street.

I have a friend who has lost about 80-100 pounds this last year. he's still holding off on clothes because he has about 50 more to go. But it's like walking with a tend in the wind.

Re: I've lost 60 - 80 pounds in the last 6 months

Went to the doc a couple of days ago, She ran blood tests and x-rays and with the exception of slightly elevated liver enzymes, everything came back fine. She attributed the weight loss to my quitting drinking beer and not eating bar food 3 days a week. I'm now down 90 pound since January and 110 since last summer. I'm not convinced I should be losing weight this quickly, but if she's not concerned, I guess I'll be alright. I wonder what would happen if I actually started exercising too.

weight loss of that magnitude deserves a chest x-ray and stool cards.

She did a chest x-ray, never mentioned stool cards, but did say a referral to GI and a colonoscopy may be in my future because I have diarrhea more often than is normal.
