The reason it works is that you're not attempting to engage them in a conversation, and you're not asking them to do anything. They're not being asked to stop what they're doing, consider your request, and consciously decide what to do. You're simply presenting yourself as something that's going to happen to them, causing them to react in the desired manner.

Don't do it with an annoyed or angry tone of voice. Flat and emotionless is the way to go. You're a force of nature.

^Yup. Same idea, except I sometimes forget my right from my left and might move into the overtaking person's path rather than away.

Sometimes I walk, sometimes I stand. Both are acceptable, provided you leave room for the walkers if you're a stander.

This. Not to mention every airport I've been in have signs saying as much.

I'd imagine people between connecting flights like to grab some grub since airlines don't give out shit anymore.

Yet another reason why I think our education system is crap. I'd much rather we teach useful knowledge that apply to normal Joe than periodic table, trigonometry, Shakespeare, or other nonsensical crap that most everybody do not use in adult life. How about teaching criminal, civil laws, rules and etiquette, insurances, investment instruments, tax laws and filing returns, jury duties? For some reason, our society like to spend their hard earned money to fund an education system for mostly useless information. Yet, when it comes to day to day knowledge to function as a law abiding citizens, we expect you to just know it somehow or learn it from your friends.

That comic sequence was the first thing I thought of.

Sit with a desk, pencil cup and a telephone in the elevator. When someone walks in, ask if they have an appointment.

Push a button, pretend it gave you a shock. Smile and go back for more.

Hold the doors open as if you're waiting for a friend, but then let it close. Say to nobody, "Hey, Wally, how's it been?"

Put a cardboard box in the corner; when someone gets on ask them if they can hear ticking.

When the doors close, announce, "Don't worry, they'll open again soon."

Wave hands wildly at invisible flies buzzing around your head.

Make race car noises when anyone gets on or off.

Shave.

Crack open your briefcase or purse, and while peering inside ask: "Got enough air in there?"

Stand silent and motionless in the corner, facing the wall, without getting off.

When arriving at your floor, grunt and strain to yank the doors open, then act embarrassed when they open by themselves.

Unless you're channeling Jackie Brown, with that song playing in your head, you better walk and get a move on. It's there so you can rocket from one end of the airport to the other without running. Not so you can be lazily carted down a hallway.

I stand wherever the heck I want to and I shoot walkers in the head.

I agree that the appropriate response is walk on the left, stand on the right. However, the world would benefit from some wider walkways. There's been a few times it's been difficult to squeeze past a large, standing person on the right.

It isn't called a "moving standway".
