Going to Austin on Thursday: Where to eat?

Preferably family friendly, as my 3-year-old daughter will be with us.

Specifically looking for a great taco place that doesn't have a long wait.
Maybe a BBQ place (No, I'm not waiting 6+ hours to go to Franklin).
And something... different? A hole in the wall that you love?

I'm leaving Austin on Saturday afternoon/evening, so there should be enough time to do maybe 3 really good meals.

Bring it, Austintonianites!

Blacks BBQ is right in Austin. If you feel like going for a little drive, Salt Lick isnt that far away.

Re: Going to Austin on Thursday: Where to eat?

Salt Lick is good, family friendly and also has all you can eat.
John Mueller Meat Co., Stiles Switch BBQ, Blacks BBQ, and la Barbecue are all great.
If you want to go outside of Austin to try some, Lockhart has three fantastic places: Black's BBQ, Kruez Market, and Smitty's Market

I honestly really like Torchy's Tacos.

For something different I'd recommend Noble Sandwich Co.

South Congress has Guero's, good Mexican food/tacos. Or Torchy's. There's a few locations around town.

Re: Going to Austin on Thursday: Where to eat?

Thanks! I'll probably check out Blacks BBQ and Noble Sandwich Co.
Looks like there's a few Torchy's in Houston, so I'll try Guero's in Austin.

The Austin Chronicle just had a contest for best breakfast tacos.

Torchy's Tacos

Everybody loves it and there are multiple locations. Some hipsters will tell you those are reasons to stay away, but that's stupid.

Amaya's Taco Village
5804 North I-35
Austin, 78745
512/458-2531
Amaya's is great for a family and has been in business forever.
Be careful that Google maps does not direct you to 5804 South I-35

In all seriousness, with the traffic getting worse and worse, you will get better recommendations if you tell what part of town you are visiting and where you are staying.

Salt Lick is good but there's always a line. Best Carolina BBQ I've ever had, though.
Chuy's is pretty good for a Mexican chain, the one by Zilker Park. Get the roasted chicken enchilada stack with both sour cream and tomatillo sauce.

Re: Going to Austin on Thursday: Where to eat?

Torchy's is great. There are several locations although the most fun one is in the truck lot in South 1st. There's other locations that are pretty close and just as good, but much less crowded. Get anything with queso there.

My recommendation would be to get a large Bob Armstrong (queso dip mixed with meat and other ingredients) at Matt's Famous El Rancho which has been in Austin since the 50s and is some of the best Tex-Mex I've had, period.

Re: Going to Austin on Thursday: Where to eat?

I really liked the burgers at Hopdoddy (in South Congress) but the wait can be interminable. Would suggest you hit it for an early lunch when they open and you should be OK.

Re: Going to Austin on Thursday: Where to eat?

There is a great doner kebab chain down there called Verts Kebap. I eat there at least once every time I go.

I tried to find good Mexican when I have been there but so far have been underwhelmed. I have not, however, gone to the places mentioned in this thread. Edit, have been to a Chuy's, but elsewhere.

Fair enough.
We're staying in "South Lamar" according to google maps. Got an AirBNB in that area, north of 290, east of 343.

The main place we are visiting (the whole point of the trip...) is the Paramount Theatre on Congress Ave. We're going to a show on Friday at 2pm, but otherwise, we have nothing specific that we're doing.

Thursday night go to Torchy's Tacos @ 3005 S. Lamar for dinner and walk to Amy's Ice Cream @ 2901 S. Lamar for dessert.

Friday don't have a big lunch, after your concert, drive out to the original Salt Lick in Dripping Springs. You'll get a little bit of a head start on the rush hour and it is a nice drive after a concert.

Saturday morning go to Papalote Taco House @ 2803 S. Lamar for breakfast tacos.

Matt's Famous El Rancho
and Maria's Taco Xpress are also both on South Lamar.

None of these places are fancy or pricey and you can take a child.

Re: Going to Austin on Thursday: Where to eat?

^^^ What he said since all of that is South. I live up north. And yeah, try and keep the driving to a minimum due to our stupid traffic. And for the love of queso, do NOT drive on MoPac (aka Loop 1). Stick to 35.

Excellent! That sounds like a decent plan... especially the drive out to Dripping Springs.

Avoid the MoPac... avoid the MoPac... got it.

And have a good time. Dripping Springs is a nice little drive. And you'll be on 290 for that.

Re: Going to Austin on Thursday: Where to eat?

Three things: Salt Lick is actually in Driftwood just a few miles south of Dripping Springs, and beer is BYOB at the Salt Lick and it is CASH ONLY.

If you have the chance, you should look in on The Broken Spoke just to be able to say you did it. Truly a real Austin landmark and also on S Lamar.

Re: Going to Austin on Thursday: Where to eat?

The only thing I would say is stay away from Matt's. They have went chain and are no longer what they were. Not to say they are terrible but don't have high expectations. IMO if you see a Chuy's stop there over a Matt's. I like Chuy's but still not awesome. This coming from comparing the restaurants in the DFW area.
A Matt's opened up in the Colleyville area and closed less than six months later (and after eating there twice I know why)...they even built their own space and still failed, and have since filed for bankruptcy.

I have always lived in North Austin and used to race back and forth between north and south on Mopac all the time without ever thinking about it. Now if someone suggests crossing the river, I cringe and moan. Even going below 2222 seems like the biggest pain in the ass.

Re: Going to Austin on Thursday: Where to eat?

I don't take 2222 anymore, mostly because of the body count and the fact that I have kids now. I wouldn't risk taking them on that road with the way so many people drive on there.

Re: Going to Austin on Thursday: Where to eat?

I really loved Salt Lick (the original one just outside of Austin), it's family friendly and as people mentioned in a dry county so that may be good. Cash only though.

There's a Pizza Hut at the intersection of Guadalupe and West Martin Luther King Jr.
