Woman Trapped In Elevator Starves To Death

Horrifying to think this type of negligence could happen.

http://www.latimes.com/world/asia/la...305-story.html

Elevator maintenance men returning to work after a month-long break for Chinese new year made a horrific discovery last week when they opened the cab of a broken lift and found the body of a woman who had been trapped inside since late January and starved to death.

The gruesome incident in the western city of Xi’an, renowned as the home of China’s Terra Cotta Warriors, has sparked outrage over the apparent negligence of the elevator repair company and the building’s management office.

The property managers told the Beijing Youth Daily that the elevator cab was returned to the first floor and taken out of service after workers had “confirmed” that no one was inside. But police investigators said workers simply shouted to check whether anyone was inside and did not open the cab to perform a visual inspection, the news magazine Caixin reported.

Someone was trapped and starved to death on an escalator?

Whew! It was China. Our own infrastructure is getting to the point that it wouldn't have surprised me to find out this happened in the US.

27 people die in elevator accidents each year in the US and 10,000 are injured. [1]

Nick Paumgarten's elevator write-up in The New Yorker is fascinating.

Re: Woman Trapped In Elevator Starves To Death

After reading the subject line, I thought it was odd that the woman would starve to death after only a few days. But trapped for a month will do it.

So the elevator was returned to the first floor and taken out of service. Is the elevator sound-proof?
Maybe if it was parked in the basement, it would be tough to hear her... but no one on the first floor could hear her screaming/banging for help?

You'd die of thirst long before you'd starve to death, wouldn't you?

Maybe we should ask wolf pack (Hangover) and see if anyone they're missing a spouse, best friend,in-law, or anyone close to them...

41 hours and he almost went crazy? Man I'm glad we have smart phones these days.

When I think Elevator deaths, I think either workers, or like Hitoshi Nikaidoh, that Houston doctor that got decapitated by one in '03.

I make it a policy to not believe any of these Chinese tabloid stories.

Yes, you would probably die of thirst after 3 -7 days max. As long as you had water, it might be possible to live without food for a month. So yeah, she died of thirst, not starvation.

Re: Woman Trapped In Elevator Starves To Death

Our church has a tiny elevator that can hold about 3 people max (about 700 lb. load limit, I think). Used mainly to transport elderly people or to take equipment to basement level.

It was required to have a call-out phone in case of emergency. I don't know if this is standard for all business elevators in U.S., but it would seem so.

Obviously not the case in China (unless it was not functioning).

Re: Woman Trapped In Elevator Starves To Death

The was a similar story to this a few years ago in Greece, involving two little boys. Must be a terrifying way to die. Like being buried alive, in a sense.

Re: Woman Trapped In Elevator Starves To Death

There is a plenty of blame to go around.

Local media reports portrayed the victim as mentally ill and said that her family believed she had just gotten lost somewhere. They had reported her missing but did not take further steps to determine her whereabouts.

That's sad, but she died closer to God.
