YACT: Windshield Shades, or: Why is Texas So Hot???

Alright, so it's not actually that hot here (yet), but I have a dark grey car with black leather seats. I'm anticipating a lot of ass-roasting in the summer, and I want to avoid that as much as I can.

So...

What are the best windshield shades you can buy?
What about covers for kid's car seats?

Any other tips other than the obvious "park in the shade" and "don't go outside, what the fuck is wrong with you?"

I've always used those gray flexible ones. Pretty quick to put up and take down (once you learn how to twist 'em just right) and they're cheap.

I have heard (but never seen) that those silver reflective ones can possibly crack the windshield if it gets too hot.

Honestly, if you're really complaining about this weather (and it's not even cracking 80 right now) you should probably move back to Canada now. You'll hate it here from April to October. And it won't be the heat that will kick your ass, it will be the humidity.

Just sell your car, get one that's a light color, and if you insist on leather, get good quality window tint.

Texas weather, it's not for pansies.

I have heard good thing about this great feature now standard on all automobiles. I don't know if I have it right, but something about a button that's very futuristic looking with two letters on it, A.C. The guy on the radio wasn't very clear what exactly do you with that button, but I think you'd press it. I don't know, don't quote me on it. I just learned how to put a horse in front of a buggy the other day.

Hey now.

I'm not complaining about the weather. Right now, it's delightful. I love it. I'm just wanting to prepare myself for the crazy heat and humidity as best as I can.

Good suggestions from HN and TomOpus, though.

I'm actually considering getting a car starter, but I never got one for the -30C weather back home, so I don't think I'd really need it for the heat either.

Here comes the fun Dan. Spring is upon us. That's when the mid to high 90's start. Come May, we'll start seeing 100+ with a satanic amount of humidity.

Viva Tejas!

Tint your windows if you're open to that. That helps my van a lot for the kids.

Re: YACT: Windshield Shades, or: WTF Why is Texas So Hot???

Wow, tough room!

I was going to recommend window tinting (not sure what the laws are in Texas as to how dark the tint can be) and perhaps a cheap, folding windshield cover. That's what I use for my car and it works well in hot summers (although Texans would probably laugh at Southern Ontario summers).

Good luck man, I tried living in Florida once and after a year went back to Canada with my tail between my legs. Their summer temps (and humidity) broke me!

not nearly as much as the black leather; plus allows more air circulation when you sit on it to help with the sweat accumulation from the humidity

Does your car have remote start? Awesome in either cold or hot weather; obviously your a/c setting are already set before you start the car remotely.

Get a tube of SPF50 sunblock and coat your windows with it.

Look up "dash mat" to protect your dashboard. Won't do anything for interior temps but hopefully protect the dash from the sun beating in from the windshield. Just a friendly tip from a neighbor in New Mexico.

Re: YACT: Windshield Shades, or: Why is Texas So Hot???

I use the fold-up foil covered shades. I wish that I had bought a dash mat for my car, but I believed the guy who sold me the car when he said that my dashboard wouldn't crack.

Mrs Danger's station wagon has dark tinted windows, a pale dash mat, and a fold-up foil windshield shade.

A moon roof helps a lot. I get in my car, crack open the moon roof, turn on the AC, and the hot air is blown out in a hurry. The station wagon doesn't have one, so there is a permanent puddle of hot air up by the headliner. It doesn't bother her, but my head is in it.

If you have dark tinted windows and you get pulled over for speeding, roll down all the windows before the cop gets out of his car. It will make him a lot more relaxed if he can see that there is nothing threatening him from your back seat. A relaxed cop is a happy cop, and a happy cop gives out warnings instead of tickets.

If you have a auto light sensor and use this feature it isn't a good idea to cover up your dash. Even though these dash mat manufacturers try to accommodate sensors on the dash, sometimes they don't align correctly or they move around and cover the sensors. The covers underside foam also tend to disintegrate over time.

Your better off using a windshield shades as others have suggested.

Re: YACT: Windshield Shades, or: Why is Texas So Hot???

You can get your windshield tinted with a uv resistance clear tint that is 100% legal. The Front 2 can be no darker then 25%, but the back windows and rear can be as dark as you want.

Very good advice, for the speeding ticket and for the tint itself. My front windows are probably tinted just on the border of legality for Ontario (car was like that when I bought it), and our laws on how tinted the front windows can be is a bit vague, so police have some flexibility on enforcing this. So I'm sure if I got pulled over and didn't roll down all my windows before the cop approached me, he wouldn't be happy and I'd be more likely to get a ticket for the speeding and the tint!

Re: YACT: Windshield Shades, or: Why is Texas So Hot???

Get your windows tinted.
Buy a good shade for the windshield (not cardboard) and use it.
Crack the windows.
Make sure your AC works.

Start there and see what happens.

Re: YACT: Windshield Shades, or: Why is Texas So Hot???

I use these all the time in hot FL.

And get your windows tinted. It helps. I did mine one touch past legal and they eventually fade to legal anyway. It's worth it. Never gotten pulled over.
