The Fearless Flyer: Who Reads This Thing? And Other Tales of Trader Joe's

Anybody seen this thing? The Fearless Flyer. They mail it to my house and there are stacks of them at every cash register. I was at Trader Joe's today and they have a huge banner in front of the store, "IT'S HERE!" it proclaimed, "GET YOUR FEARLESS FLYER TODAY!"

Who reads this shit? For those who don't know, it's a 24 page newsprint catalog of Trader Joe's products. It has no pictures of the products, not even the labels. Instead it has olde timey clip art that looks like Someecards and then paragraph after paragraph describing the new and exciting food options at Trader Joe's. Like three paragraphs describing "crackers". This months issue contains a two paragraph write up on "The Baguette" that they're offering for $1.99. And there's three paragraphs spent on "Brussels Sprouts in a Microwavable Bag!" (that's their exclamation point--they're excited.)

I love Trader Joe's but there's many things about them that baffle and amuse me. I was hoping this could be the one and only "Trader Joe's WTF?" thread if anyone cares to discuss.

I thought the Flyer was sometimes interesting to read. But that was when I had a Trader Joe's close by. The closest one out here in south of Kansas City so I haven't been to a TJs since I've moved here.

It's just their version of the "flyer" that every supermarket puts out every week, but TJs seems to be done seasonally or so. I don't mind it.

Most store flyers look like this:

The Fearless Flyer is a wall of text with no pictures of the food.

I sort of like the flyer, depending on how bored I am ...

I never read them. I get them in the mail and just toss them, even though I shop at Trader Joe's regularly.

I do at least skim through it because sometimes there are new products that I might want to try.

I read the flyer. It's corny, but does let me know of some good deals on specific stuff I buy.

What part of my post did you not understand? I said it's TJs version of the flyer. I know what a flyer looks like.

I skim it in astonishment. The giant banner today was the straw that broke the camel's back. Proclaiming, "IT's HERE! COME AND GET THE FEARLESS FLYER!" was just comical.

I read it when it appears in my bag. Usually I shop there and don't even notice it, nor do I seek it out. But it's an entertaining read. They're just trying to be quirky and charming.

I've never noticed a store banner for it. Maybe my store doesn't do that, or maybe it's a new thing or I don't go on the right days.

But TJ's flyer is so far outside of the norm of what most flyers are that it's absurd. To start with it's 24 pages long. Their "version" of a flyer is pretty silly.

Ah, but is it printed on recycled hemp paper with sustainable soy-based ink using carefully restored hand-cranked presses in a reclaimed industrial building heated and cooled using solar power?

Well, naturally. PS: That's GMO-free, organic sustainable soy ink, but read fast because it is preservative-free.

There is an online version, organized by category, with pictures and nutritional info. But the printed flyer is all about quirky.

Ah the Fearless Flyer is from Trader Joes? I thought it was from American Airlines.

Wasn't this an episode of Seinfeld?

I was just commenting to my wife a couple weeks ago that the Fearless Flyer is like the J. Peterman catalog of grocery flyers. Would be a pretty good gig to write copy for it.

Yes it's a copy writer's dream if you have a lot to say about Peta Chips.

It's Trader Joes being Trader Joes. As long as they keep selling me two buck chuck, cheap dog treats and surprisingly good frozen meals I'm good.

I hate the email version. It's just a single image, usually the cover. It's not useful in any way, shape or form. At least the Publix email has links that take me directly to their weekly ad and my digital coupons.

I, uh, enjoy reading the Flyer. It makes the food sound really good. And stuff.
