Is the female part in "Baby, it's cold outside?" playfully flirting?

Or is it a song about rape?

----------------------------------

I think it mostly has to be how it's played. I've seen the genders flipped. Power play, I guess. Lady Gaga and JG Levitt did it w/ the she leading flirtation. The one I remember the most is Montalban and the other woman. Can't remember who she even was, familiar face or not. In that one... Montalban comes across a bit too strongly.

Rape? I dunno. Persuasion towards the male want? Sure. But it all depends.

I asked my wife. She said it's a rape song. So I guess it's a song about rape.

And what about "We Wish You a Merry Christmas"? At what point does it become a violent home invasion for figgy pudding?

The woman in the song is playing hard to get, but at the very end, both characters sing, "baby, it's cold outside" together. That implies that she was consensual to his advances (or loopy from the ruffies )

Telling a woman that there are no cabs to be had is not a rape threat.

The song got caught by a culture change. Before the sexual revolution, a Good Girl said 'no' and had to be worn down, although both people knew where it was going.

Also, those songs from the 1930s where the woman sings about her sexual relationship with her daddy are not about incest.

But did it? Seems like there's a bunch of new covers of this song by famous artists every year. Within the last five years, There have been covers by Willie Nelson/Norah Jones, She&Him, Seth MacFarlane/Sara Bareilles, Idina Menzel/Michael Buble, Darius Rucker/Sheryl Crow, Cee Lo Green/Christina Aguilera, Kelly Clarkson/Ronnie Dunn, Lady Gaga/Joseph Gordon-Levitt, etc.

If the current culture thinks this is a date rape song, you'd think that people would just want to let the song fade off into obscurity, but the opposite is happening.

Lady Gaga plays the aggressive role. For those who think the song is about date rape, does that make everything okay?

She needs to lose the tats to even remotely come across as classy (i.e., not lookin' like a man in drag).

Where's my WhoTony vomit avatar.

It's rape. But it's quaint olde rape. Like how our grandfathers used to rape our grandmothers.

Also, when Dean Martin sings it it's extremely rape-y.

‘Baby It’s Cold Outside’ was once an anthem for progressive women. What happened?

Both versions of the song from 1949 movie Neptune's Daughter

By the way, if it was written in 1944, why would it win an original song Oscar in 1949? Foul!!

It's a mix between rape, strong flirtation, and rape.

Re: Is the female part in "Baby, it's cold outside?" playfully flirting?

I really like Dolly Parton and Rod Stewart's version of this song. "You sure know how to wear a girl down" may not be politically correct, but I've had a few hot and heavy makeout sessions with the male of the species, and Dolly had it just right. (Actually, it works that way with women too ...)

Listened to the James Taylor and Natalie Cole version yesterday and didn't find it near as good.

Wait, so that's Joseph Gordon-Leavitt in that commercial with Lady Gaga? Wow, he's not aging well at all.
