TV in break room etiquette?

Is there such a thing as TV in break room etiquette when the boss didn't give any "viewing rules" ? Google search pretty much brings up nothing.
I'm only asking because a friend sometimes clashes with co-workers who come in at different break times and sometimes change channels or volume while he is still on break watching something.
I'm kind of thinking the " first-in, first-served" rule would apply but then again maybe not.

Re: TV in break room etiquette?

I figure it's not worth the trouble of planning to watch something in the break room. So many people like different shows, I'd rather be entertained with my phone or tablet instead. It's pretty dumb to make workplace drama over TV on break.

But it's rude to just change the channel if someone else is watching something, wherever you are. I would think some kind of rules would have to be implemented if problems keep coming up.

It is a bad idea to have a TV in the break room.

Re: TV in break room etiquette?

Let loose with a silent but deadly. That tends to clear out a break room without having to get confrontational with people, and then you can have the TV and room all to yourself.

Mob Rules (and it's bad to have one)

Yes, but then when it accidentally comes out loud and wet, it leads to a whole other set of problems.

He may be a meth-head, but Nth Power is correct.

I keep a spare pair of pants and underwear in my car trunk right next to the spare tire and road flares.

Have your buddy get a universal remote and just change it back each time.

Re: TV in break room etiquette?

I think the polite thing would be to cede to the person who is already in there watching something.
If his co-workers are just storming in and ignoring he fact that he is already there watching something, that seems like a pretty crappy situation just in terms of respect.

At the same time, one against many should probably just relent to democracy, but they should still ask first.

I would get up, change it back, and that would be that. I would also have the remote with me. But I'm not the pushover your friend is.

Re: TV in break room etiquette?

Seems pretty whiney ass to give a fuck what's on tv in the break room. As if not having to work for awhile isn't good enough. Pathetic.

Shouldn't be a TV in the breakroom. Many issues avoided.

Re: TV in break room etiquette?

Yeah. We used to have a TV in the break room and then they remodeled the break room into a nice lounge and the TV never came back or was replaced. It's much cooler now and less disruptive.

The break room needs more tvs, not less

The break room needs to be like a sports bar with multiple tvs, pool table and jukebox.

Re: TV in break room etiquette?

Common courtesy would be to ask if someone is watching & mind if the channel is changed. Unless they are watching Maury Povitch or TMZ, in which case etiquette be damned. Bad TV trumps manners.

I really don't understand why businesses put TV's in public places anyway. I've changed auto repair companies because the one I used to use had this shrill, stretched SD, awful mess of daytime TV full of lawyer commercials on at all time in their waiting room. It was pure torture getting an oil change.

A TV in the break room would just interfere with everyone having their faces buried in their phones.

Better yet get a phone with IR and covertly change the channels and volume. Hijinks will ensue.

As long as no conversation takes place, it was a successful lunch.

Re: TV in break room etiquette?

We have a tv in the breakroom and I have yet to see any problems. Breaks are staggered so it's not like there's a room full of people at any given time.

Re: TV in break room etiquette?

In the break room at my office everyone's on computers or their phones so no one's paying attention to the TV. And besides, the TV's up on top of a big refrigerator and the remote was lost years ago.
