Do you call the evening meal dinner or supper?

I don't know if this is a regional thing like soda/pop/coke. My parents called the afternoon meal dinner and the evening meal supper. It's all I heard growing up.

Now though I tend to just call afternoon meal lunch and evening meal dinner.

To me dinner and supper are basically synonyms. To me they both imply a big meal.

I never eat a big meal in the afternoon so I just call the afternoon meal lunch. It's also what school/work calls the afternoon meal "a lunch break" and not a "dinner break." It makes sense to me at least.

Always dinner. I think supper is a regional thing.

I call it dinner and my wife calls it supper. I'm from the northeast and she's from the midwest.

Re: Do you call the evening meal dinner or supper?

It's mainly an issue of formality. Dinner is the main, formal meal, whether or not it's in the afternoon or the evening. Lunch is the lighter, informal version of the afternoon meal and supper is the lighter, informal version of the evening meal. When I was a kid, Sundays were usually the only day when dinner was served in the afternoon. Thanksgiving or Christmas would be the other days when dinner was earlier.

All that said, in our culture today, supper has basically become a straight synonym for dinner. I'm not sure if it's regional or not, but I say supper all the time and I'm in New England.

My girlfriend in from PA and she and her family seem to use dinner and supper interchangeably. She would probably say supper more but she knows I think it's weird. I'm in MD and have never used that word to describe dinner.

If wife is eating me, we call it dinner. If I'm eating her, we call it supper. Easy.

You may suggest a nice restaurant.
Ah. Well, there's the Dubonnet Club.
Actually that's not so much a restaurant -- more a supper club.
Ah.

Always "dinner," but as a kid I once read the term "lupper" and wondered why it never caught on as widely as "brunch."

Re: Do you call the evening meal dinner or supper?

I would visit relatives in CT and they would call it breakfast, dinner (instead of lunch), and supper.

But then again garage sales were "tag sales" and liquor stores were "package stores" so..

I pretty much never say supper, but I think of it as a synonym for dinner.

That's what I had assumed. My parents were born in the 50s and lived their whole lives in the Midwest. They called the three meals of the day as breakfast, dinner, and supper.

Same here, but I'm not really sure why I do it exactly since as I said above my parents called it breakfast, dinner, and supper. So I grew up calling evening meal supper.

Yet somewhere along the line once I left my parents' home I began calling it breakfast, lunch, dinner. I don't really remember why or how I changed. I think probably it has to do with like I said in my opening post about how school/work calls it "lunch break" instead of "dinner break" so I began to call it lunch too. I don't really remember. It's weird.

I still live in the Midwest, but outside of my family I seldom hear the word supper. Maybe instead of being a regional thing, the word supper is more of a generational thing?

Re: Do you call the evening meal dinner or supper?

I call it supper because my mother called it supper. The corresponding countrified practice of calling the noon meal "dinner" is something I don't share, though. My grandmother did.

Supper if I'm just eating at home, dinner if I'm going out...lunch is always lunch.

I'm also from PA and can confirm that it's an interchangeable term. I've always used dinner, but I'm also the only one around who uses "soda" instead of "pop."
