Why do I have to enter my birthday to visit a beer-related website?

I understand that I have to be 21 years or older to consume, purchase, possess, sell, etc any alcoholic product, but are there really laws that make it illegal to visit a website if you're under 21?

I could see why beer companies may not want to sell merchandise to people under 21 (at least I can see why they would want that to be an "official" stance), but if someone wore a Bud Light hat and they were under 21, would they be violating any laws?

And has the age verification ever stopped someone from visiting a beer website? Has there ever been one person in the history of the internet who wanted to visit a brewery's website, entered their correct D.O.B., was denied access and said "oh well, I guess I'll have to wait a few years before I can check this website out."

And do people who are over 21 actually enter their correct birthday? I always just put in January 1, 19XX, with the year being the first obvious "over 21" year I find when scrolling.

Are you old enough to be posting about this topic? What's your birth date?

I don't think it's the law and while it obviously seems pointless, I bet if they didn't do it, people would flip out. Now they can say that they didn't want anyone under 21 entering their website but they couldn't help it that the person lied. Plausible deniability for the win.

I believe it has to do with self-regulation within the alcohol industry as it pertains to marketing/advertising to underage people. Obviously anyone with half a brain can get past the websites' "security," but this at least gives the liquor companies plausible deniability in the matter.

I usually see how far back the years go. "Yes, I was born Jan. 1, 1900, let me read about booze, please."

Steam makes you enter a birthdate to view Mature games info. I think I saw a breakdown of their users, and something like 90% were born on January 1, 1900.

I have no problems with this. But imagine that every time you visited DVDTalk, you had to re-enter your birthday to "prove" you're over 13.

That is exactly what I do. I'd love to know if they go through any reports and say "Wow, 2,102 people aged 110+ viewed our website this month alone!"

Alcohol and tobacco companies have been heavily pressured to avoid marketing to anyone under 18 or even 21 by politicians. With the way society is going, sooner or later the minimum drinking age will be raised even higher to 25. I think most everyone realizes that anyone can enter any age on these kind of websites, which is why you'll eventually see some form of national ID verifying age needed to do anything on the Internet.

Impossible (the 25 year old part). If anything it might get lowered to 18. Beer and alcohol companies would never concede the entire college market.

I'm the webmaster for that site. I was going to send you free beer on your birthday, but you ruined the surprise, so never mind.

If a site is prompting for a birthday for age verification (and not asking for any other personal information) I typically do use my actual birthday. Never really thought about faking it. Not like they can do anything illicit with just a date.

Re: Why do I have to enter my birthday to visit a beer-related website?

90% of the internet was born on January 1st. (Or whatever default month and day the website uses.) I never bother changing it. I leave it on the default month and day and just pick a random year that I know is going to be old enough without having to actively think about it. Sometimes I am born in the 1960s. Sometimes I am born in the 1910s. Who knows. I let randomness decide.

That will mess with their marketing department!

I always enter June 6, 1966 as my birthdate on any site that requests it. Devil be damned to those who dare ask my birthdate! It's none of their business, of course.

Passive social responsibility. Anyone remember the days of the internet when you had to enter a birthday to enter a porn site? Or an R-rated movie trailer?

It's been devalued to 616, which says scary things about Marvel.
