YAGT: Gift of gratitude for someone letting you stay at their house?

We're going to be spending a week in another city, staying at a family member's house.

Obviously, we want to show our gratitude by buying a gift for the family. But we have no idea what that gift should be.

Suggestions?

Wine was my first thought. But other than that... I don't know.

A nice bottle of whisky. or whatever fine alcohol floats their boat (snoop before buying).

Leave a dirty laundry bag and tell them you'll pick it up next week

I like that. I'll definitely see what they prefer, although come to think of it, they might be beer people more than fine alcohol.

I'd have to tell them to mail it back to me.

Well, then, buy them some good beer! But if they have a liquor cabinet or a wine rack, those are appropriate purchases even if they mostly drink beer.

If nothing else, you can treat them to a nice dinner while you're there.

I like the idea of a nice dinner. Depending on how thrifty you are, I think the gift should be 50% of what a hotel would've cost.

We just had relatives visit. They took us out to dinner twice.

They can't very well know my tastes in whiskey. I've never discussed it with them.

If it's just a few nights, that's what we do - a really nice dinner with drinks on the last night.

If it's the whole week, we usually buy the groceries.

Although last time we stayed a weekend, dinner for 4 was $300 which was more than the Hotel would have been.

Does anybody remember what NickDawgy's house guest gave him when she left?

Should Eddie Money expect a gift when his house guest finally leaves?

Leave them a nice upper decker in the toilet.

The best gift you can give will be to leave the entire house cleaner after you leave than it is when you arrived. That, and a nice written note or card expressing your sincere appreciation to your hosts.

That seems rather arbitrary. I have no idea what city OP is going to, but let's assume a hotel would cost $200/night. Are you really suggest they give a $700 gift to their relatives?

Anyway, I agree with those who said a great gift would be to take the family out to a nice dinner one night. In addition, you could also send a small gift basket or similar after your visit. Can't imagine any relatives (who would invite you to stay with them for a week) would find you ungrateful.

Re: YAGT: Gift of gratitude for someone letting you stay at their house?

My family would yell at me if I tried to buy them something really expensive as a thank you for staying at their house. I would get something along the lines of "We let you stay here to help save you money, not so you could spend it on us."

Throughout the week you should steal things and then gift them back after you leave.
